HI guys, thanks for reading. I am torn between a decision coming up. I am doing IM obviosuly why i am posting here. I am choosing between basically a really solid community program(university affiliated) in phoenix-->GOod samaratin. V. U of Arizona which is in Tuscon. They are a top 20 program in many different speciality areas.

My dilemma is this. I want to do a fellowship-and wnat to keep myself competitive however I really want to stay in phoenix where i am-location is huge for me and its a big draw. The thing is I am wondering if going to a community program -how much will this hurt my fellowship opportunity v. a school like U of Arizona. Good sam has its own fellowship programs-which would be great, but considering I dont get in there-how favorably to the countries fellowhips look upon community v. university?

Any input would be great-I am having a hard time with this one.

Relax. You have 11 months to decide. My opinion: U of A > Good Sam

I can't tell you what to do. But I can say that I've struggled with a similar decision. I was debating a great community program in a great location vs. good university program in a good location vs. top 10 program in a city I don't care much for. In the end, after a discussion with my residency advisor, I ranked community prog way down my list (yes you can make it into a good fellowship and you can get an academic position afterwards, but the odds will certanly be against you unless you manage to distinguish yourself), I went with my gut and ranked the university program in a location I liked 1st, but matched into the top prog I ranked 2nd. Now I'll just need to deal with relocating somewhere I'm not entirely thrilled about, but hey you can't always have everything, and I'm sure as hell (boy) not going to kick myself for matching into one of the best programs... I might think different in 3 years, but then it'll be time to move on 🙂

When in doubt, go with the university program over the community program if you have firmly decided that you want to try and get a competitive fellowship.

Follow your heart. That's what I did . I ranked Good Sam above many many top notch university programs. When I first fell in love with IM it was at a community program. Good Sam is solid and their residents have good fellowship placement. You will get a fellowship regardless of where you train, because it is up to you to distinguish yourself....Anyhow, best wishes in your decision
