Hello all,

I've been a longtime viewer, but this is probably my first post.

I have recently been asking myself if i should give up! I am 8 months from graduation from UWashington, with a BS in Physiology. I have been determined to become an academic plastic surgeon since an AVM was removed from my ear about 13 years ago. Now comes the problem. I was diagnosed as an insulin dependent diabetic at 17, and diagnosed as a brittle diabetic at 18. Needless to say, my jump from highschool to UW was negatively influenced. Until last year, I could hardly maintain a 2.4 GPA. When I recieved my insulin pump, my GPA went up to 3.2 for the year, leaving me at 2.6 overall. On top of my illness, I've had to work full time since I started at UW! So far, I am at about 3.7 from my midterms, still working full time.

There are a few good things. I scored 35R on the MCAT, have 2 years O.R. experience, dazzling letters of rec, published as a primary author, and am trained in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (and a few other surgeries) by the CVES here at UW.

So all looks good except the GPA. Is there any hope? Will anyone even look at me? Will any good post-bacc programs look at me?

I need advice! Sorry for the long post, please tell me that it isn't futile!

No way, the situation is definitely NOT futile! I think you have a really solid chance in this cycle... I mean the problems with the GPA are understandable (illness), I would DEFINITELY make mention of it somewhere in my application! You will definitely stand out, despite the grades. Keep your chin up!

i admire your story- best of luck

Definitely, your story shows incredible character, and I hope this shows through your application!

What a story to tell! You demonstrate a lot of resilience and determination, and I think have a great shot at medical schools. Apply wisely, and tell your story compellingly, don't use it as an excuse, but rather emphasize what you have learned from all of this. Insight, reflection, and determination are great qualities to have for medical school.

Best of luck,

BTW, are you a Washington resident? You seem to have a lot of connections at UW and that can definitely help in your favor.

You're golden. Go for it. I have a similar MCAT(35P) and a slightly higher GPA...but nowhere near the calibre of recommendations and extracurriculars you do. Plus, no reasearch here. You'll do great, I'm sure! Make sure to convey your story in an appropriate manner and the adcoms will see you for who you really are.

What an awesome story!! If any ADCOMs see that and don't say "We want him/her NOW!", I will hunt them down and smack them upside their number-whoring heads. 😉
