This spring I am finishing up my organic, taking genetics, and my first semester of physics. Should I take the MCAT this upcoming fall to take it, see what it's like, see how I do and what I need to prepare for to take it again in the spring a year from now or do I wait until I get physics and biochem done? I am a little anxious to see how I do. I plan on applying to med school so that I am accepted to start school in the fall of 08

Well...the August test is the last paper and pencil test so I wouldn't really let you see what it's like. It is also a test you only want to take once. If you feel you are prepared, take it. If not, wait.

I'd say try it. I'm going to sit the GAMSAT as much as i can (but god, it's expensive) before my final year. It doesn't hurt to get acquainted to the test.

If you just want to see how you would do, try practice test at commercial prep center such as KAPLAN or Princeton Review. Or you can buy a practice test and take it on your own. The commercial practice tests are only half of the original length and doesn't give you exact number that you will get at the real MCAT. But it gives you an idea where you stand. If you take MCAT as a practice, you might not get a good score, which is not pleasant. But you really want to take a paper format test, maybe you should study hard and take it seriouly.

I agree with Brett, take it if you are ready, if not...don't. All MCAT scores are reported to the medical schools, so you don't want to take one just for practice. The online practice tests are good indicators (for the most part - not including the first one which was too easy) and as mentioned, the test is going to change format and length in '07, so it wouldn't be indicative of what you would see when you take it "for real". You don't need biochem for the MCAT and there isn't much from Physics II that you couldn't learn for the test if you are motivated enough, so assess where you are and go from there.
