Just wondering what you guys would suggest to keep with you at all times on rotation. What "tools of the trade" did you carry with you? Where there any books you "usually" carried, regardless of which rotation? Palm programs you couldn't live without? I've heard of people carrying food... is that common? I thought this would be interesting and educational... thanks.

Some things I always carried (and sometimes still do):

Pocket Maxwell's
Lots of pens (residents were always borrowing them or I was misplacing them)
Gum or breath fresheners
Alcohol wipes (to clean off stethoscope after usage)
Stethoscope
Bandage scissors
Pocket Pharmacopeia

I like to keep small farm animals in mine and an extra stash of pocket lint in case they get hungry. I never get bored, and they always keep me on my toes.

Never be without a Pocket Pharmacopeia.

I also find Tarascon's:
Critical Care and Internal Medicine
and
Adult Emergency Medicine pocketbooks to be extremely valuable at my level (end of intern year). As a student maybe only the CCIM one...

And no I'm not a shareholder in Tarascon.

Maxwell's
Stethoscope
Tongue Depressor
Trauma Shears
Heme kit (i.e. developer, cards, KY)
Business Card
Patient List with updated labs

I'm an EM intern so I wouldn't expect a student on psych to be carrying around trauma shears!
