So I have around $800 that I haven't spent this year. I can't buy electronic devices with it. Im not sure what my anesthesia program is providing for us next year so I hesitate to buy books. I was thinking another stethoscope would be good. Anyone have any other ideas?

This would be for my upcoming CA1 year.

sounds like you need an all expenses (or $800 of expenses) paid trip to a medical conference.

Another stethoscope? Why? Plan on losing the one you've got? I've had the same one for the last decade and it's still not slowing down though I have had to get new ear buds at times and had to buy a new diaphragm for it once.

They keep getting stolen. I'm on my 3rd since the start of my 3rd year of med school. I figure, why not let someone else buy my next one.

We've got pretty strict limits on travel. I thought of that one. 🙂

Holy cow that's some dumb luck!

Buy some nice scrubs? scrub caps? Sounds like if you can't buy electronic stuff, you are probably pretty limited in what you can spend that much money on quickly!

Have you taken step3? Can you spend it on that?

If you can't spend it on electronics meetings and you don't want to buy books, that leaves very few options. I would call the program you are going to and just ask what books they provide and then purchase some that you won't be getting for free. A nice pair of protective glasses is an option, but I wouldn't pay too much. Some places allow you to use the money for uniform, which might include a pair of tennis shoes for the OR or some specific OR shoes that might use up some of it. If you get a stethoscope, get a pretty inexpensive one for reasons you already know. You will rarely wear it, but a nice lab jacket with your name on it is another option. The program may provide that already, but they are usually not the nice ones. Perhaps a nice soft shell OR jacket would be allowable with your funds.

Dumb luck is right. All 3 have been cards 3s so they aren't cheap, either.

I have taken step 3 and it was paid for by the program. I used some of my money for prep materials. Maybe they would reimburse my hotel stay for the test. Forgot about that.

A scrub cap...thats a good idea.

I will probably contact them. I just thought maybe there was something obvious I was missing. I know for sure I am getting the big Miller and I think something else. Not sure though.

I think I will get an engraved fancy cards 3 this time. The hospital keeps the money I don't spend.

Do you have to pay your own license fees? May be early, but could use it for that
Journal subscriptions
ASA, state component, SPA, SOAP, SCCM, SOCCA, SCA, or ASRA dues
OR shoes

Will they reimburse any other expense, cell phone or internet? Not an electronic device, but valuable

You could always buy stuff like ACLS cards. I have colleagues that use Pocket Anesthesia as a quick resource when they can't remember some things.

step 1: Buy BOOKS ON AMAZON!
step 2: print receipt
step 3: cancel order.

step 4: Be a good human being, and send me some money if you end doing this.

/unethical

Oh thats right...haven't paid my ASA yet. There's another one.

I forgot! I can get apps with my money. I have an android phone now but also have a old iphone that could become a "touch" so to speak...

This, if your program allows moonlighting and requires a temporary/special license to do so.

That, or ask them about buying a digistim - sure it's electronic but if they just have your electronics provision to keep you from buying a computer or ipad...it couldn't hurt to ask.

Don't do the latter. Root your android and jailbreak your iphone and add the right repositories... you'll have any app you want.

+1 to calling your anes residency and asking what books. How about buying $800 of books, getting reimbursed, the. Returning all the books for cash?

Call program and ask what they are going to supply, and what you will be allowed to purchase in the upcoming years.

Then ask a few residents and/or attendings what books they treasure the most.(hint: for the next three years, a couple of reallly good review books are your friend)

then buy what you are not getting for free, and won't have the money for next year.

And totally ignore those suggestions that reek, even so slightly, of unethical behavior. That can cause you nothing but grief. Trust me.

Ok, so I'm getting baby Miller and Morgan/Mikhail. Knowing that, what would anyone recommend?

Spend it acquiring some female cat....:naughty:

The two volume huge big Miller
The big Barash
Jaffe (from Stanford)

Regional anesthesia textbook (usra.ca vs Stanford)
TEE textbook
Cardiac anesthesia textbook

Peds anesthesia textbook or pocketbook

Or do the "unethical" thing, get the cash, then buy the newest edition of what you need when u get to anesthesia residency. That at least is in the right spirit. I suppose if you want to be truly ethical, you should buy educational materials that will improve your internal medicine foundation (assuming you are doing IM internship) -- perhaps an ICU textbook. Perhaps point of care ultrasound for ED/ICU. Transthoracic echo. The big Harrison two volume bible.
