Hey guys,

I have a lipoma in my side, between my ribcage and the skin. I had it checked by my family doctor a 4 years ago and he said I shouldn't worry about it.

It has grown over time and it has started to bother me when I lay on it while sleeping. What type of doctor should I go and see to have it removed? My dad had one under his scalp years ago and a traumatologist removed it. I don't know if I should go to a traumatologist, like my dad did, or to a dermatologist, or directly to a surgical specialist.

Thanks.

They can be removed by general surgery or plastics. Sometimes truama surgeons do them as elective cases.

Lots of people can remove lipomas. Its not exactly rocket science.

Many family practitioners remove superficial ones in the office, or you can have a general surgeon do it. A plastic surgeon is a reasonable choice if in a cosmetically important area like the face but otherwise not necessary.

A "traumatologist" seems overkill to remove a lipoma but yes, since they have done general surgery training, they *can* do it (although I do not know why unless they were low on operative cases and were bored).
