I know the answers will vary but I'm just curious. Who do you work under (grade, post doc), own project, etc. To what extent is the average applicant. Also your compensation.

My final year of undergrad, I worked in a lab with one of the PhD's in the lab as my mentor. Had my own project that was an related to the other projects in the lab. Got paid $12 an hour but only got credit for 10 hours a week no matter how many I worked, which was anywhere from 20-30.

4 years of research. One year was scut work (cleaning glass wear, lab safety, etc.) for an organic lab. However, I got to really know the PI and she let me set up reactions. I left that lab for Neuroscience research. Had 2 poster presentations and 2 pubs (1st author in both).
