What would be your second choice of career if you did not want or couldn't be a physician?

Dentist. If that doesn't work either, then PA.

If it has to be non-medicine related, then biologist/researcher I guess.

I can't picture myself pursuing a career other than medicine. I guess my alternative would've been biomedical engineering and then research (but I would hate my life for not going to medical school)...

Some sort of engineering. It'd be tough to live with the fact that I couldn't get into a school, though. Really tough. I'm using that to motivate me now, actually.

Owner of a multi-billion dollar holdings company... Which I'm planning to build once I'm done with residency anyway (if I get into medical school).

Haha, my sentiments exactly. It's a good motivator. I can manage engineering for 4 years, but I'll probably not come to terms with the fact that I couldn't get into med school so this was my *only* choice.

Architect.

anyways, if I don't move my ass of this couch, I'm gonna get a pressure ulcer.

go to culinary school and become a chef/pastry chef

i want to open a bakery later in life

I remember this thread coming up before. It eventually revealed that around 90% of SDNers would go into porn as a back up to medical school.

I would choose public health probably.

Sugar free cupcake/cookie baker :D not a large market for that though...

I think this is actually my second choice of career, but I think it's the right choice. I don't believe it ever crossed my mind that I wouldn't be able to do it, but I suppose if I failed at this, I'd go back to engineering. Or try doing photography full-time.

Make it gluten free and you've got yourself a niche. Or take the sugar free further (I'm assuming you'll substitute with agave or similar) and go whole wheat.

I'd probably stay in research, probably branch away from bench work towards compliance or genetic counseling.

definitely architecture. that's what I left to pursue sciences instead and get ready to apply for medicine.

Porn star or possibly a massues...playing piano gives you strong fingers...ladies love strong fingers

I wanted to get into Business Marketing, but then things happened and i changed my path to pursuing medicine! so yeah if i couldn't be a Physician i would get into Business Marketing!

I'm glad to see so many responses stating architecture! I thought I was the only madman interested in it as an alternative career.

Joining the CIA was also a dream of mine...as was being an astronaut- though that fell out the window after a quick realization of how all the odds were against my favor (much harder than becoming a physician) and once I realized how little financial compensation they received despite the rigors and sacrifices of training. Ah well. At least I didn't ever dream of being a truck driver like the current head of the NIH, Francis Collins.

Anyways, once I become a board certified Plastic Surgeon my plan is to found a design firm and eventually become a billionaire. Ambitious? Yes. But do-able.

Teaching. Or trolling.

It'd be pretty cool to be an industrialist/engineer, though I wouldn't mind being a consultant for the CBI.

Video Game Developer or Dentist. In reality, probably dentistry though.

I want to say I'd go into research, but I don't think I could deal with the awful job market.

So, either engineering or take up programming.

circus arts or underwater photographer :)

I think that I would want to be a film producer.

- intelligence officer in the military
- private banker/financial analyst
- aerospace engineer
- concert pianist
- high school social studies teacher
- tour guide

or, you know, trophy wife.

truck driver.... I said this at an interview, and did not get accepted. Eh, i got in elsewhere, i just figured the interviewer would sympathize and let me go with my first choice career path (no offense to truck drivers).

For the females stating that they would like to become strippers, porn stars, or trophy wives, you need to post pictures. kthnx. ;)

A firetruck

 That's the exact answer my little brother would give when people asked him what he wanted to have as a career!

I'd be a high school orchestra teacher or a pharmacologist.
Or a French woman/maid/something or other. I love croissants.

We've got a guy over in pharmacy that posts pictures of his culinary creations. Maybe you should go into business together ;)

ColeOnTheTroll? Hmm... sounds sorta familiar. jk

Oh...that's what you call it

The ongoing joke in pharmacy is that if you can't cut it, go to truck driving school. But, I suppose it could be a great, stable career. I don't see the issue
