I am looking for an introductory Neuroscience text--one that explains all the concepts well, and is concise, and easy to understand for MSIs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Use both and you will be golden:
Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases: Blumenfeld
BRS neuro

I'm not in med school (yet), but this is the introductory neuroscience text used at both MIT and Brown, if that counts any:

Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain (Bear, Connors, Paradiso). Its a *very* good book, in my opinion. One of the most useful texts I've had in the past two years, in fact.

I have to disagree. While this was our "required" text, I bought this book and was very disappointed. It seemed like more of an undergrad neuro boo, delving off into the wild blue, as most textbooks do, without getting to the punctual point demanded by the busy medical student. I thus never cracked it open, and sold it to the incoming MS1's who, like I, just "had" to have it.

My resources, besides class materials, included the Haines neuro atlas which has a bunch of diagrams, cross-sections, tracts, etc. that are very helpful, and "Clinical Neuroscience Made Ridiculously Simple" which is a pretty neat little book that will show you the basic concepts and at least help you get through the first few weeks.

LOL, suppose I should have clarified: it *is* an undergrad book @ the two schools I mentioned.

Blumenfeld is great. I found Neuroanatomy made ridiculously simple to be TOO simple-didn't really give you much, although I suppose it would be good if you knew absolutely nothing and had a test the next day.

Oops, sorry, I didn't read closely enough 🙂

Ridiculously Simple was written by a retired UMiami professor. All of our students read it when the current neuroanatomy profs do a poor job explaining something.

thalamus.wustl.edu is great
James Fix also has a great review book, high yield neuro.

HY neuro can be slightly intimidating depending on the level of detail your course will go into. I find it great to use after learning alot of neuro in a week, to highlight whats important.

hey there,

we just started neuro about a week ago. So far, the book we are using is "Neuroscience: Third Edition" by Dale Purves and "Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases" by Hal Blumenfeld, M.D. The first book doesn't do much for me personally. However, the second book is excellent, and I highly recommend it.

Both, by the way, are required for our Neuroscience course.

I think that I may be in search of a better neuroscience book than our Purves book, but I'm going to think about that a bit more. I don't want to buy a new txtbk if this one will suffice (and I'm praying that it does...these books are quite expensive 😱 )

The Human Brain: An Introduction to Its Functional Anatomy by John Nolte

You could use it for an overview, or really read it in depth to get all the specifics. At any rate, it's the most well written book I've ever had. Great illustrations with understandable text to support them.

neuroanatomy by young and young. very reader-friendly book. i enjoyed reading it. the hardest part in neuro would be the basal ganglia and thalamus, but this book explained it quite well!

Whatever you do, DON'T buy the Medical Neuroscience text by Nadeau. This is the recommended text for my class (switched from Kandel's huge tome) and is far too general for a medical school class. Topics covered by two hours of lecture are glossed over within 3-4 pages of this text, with most of that space being devoted to mostly useless pictures.

You've been warned. 😉
