What's all the hype about residencies?

Okay,

So we have High School where we work and toil to get to a wonderful Undergrad...

Then we have Undergrad where we work and toil to get to a wonderful medical school...

Then we have medical school where we work and toil to get to a wonderful residency...

Then what?

What does it matter if you do your residency at Hopkins versus some no name school?
Other than getting the name that comes from that school, what else do you get?

If you are not going into academic medicine... residency doesnt matter at all. Think about it.... did your parents research where your pediatrician went for residency before they took you there when you were sick. Nope! At least I hope not. Actually... if you think about it..... medical school does not matter either if you are not going into academics. But... for those who are not sure.... they dont want to close any doors. If you are going into academics and want to become a faculty member at UCSF (or some other competitive place)... they want you to have been trained at top places. But....if you are sure that you want to become a community physician.... medical school and residency dont matter.
