What are they known best for? What are they proud of? Current students, what do you like about the school?

I currently am an undergraduate at The University of Iowa and am applying to Carver for this fall. Iowa has great, new facilities and also their C.E.L.L.S program is a helpful because it integrates you with other med students of different ages. Most of my friends are med students, and they love it so far.

I grew up in Iowa City and have mostly positive feelings about Carver. Iowa City is a nice place to live and Carver is a top-notch state medical school. The medical school is particularly known for the three O's: otolaryngology, ophthalmology, and orthopedic surgery.

working on the "why iowa" secondary question, eh? ;)

I'm actually in Iowa right now --- attending Cornell College.

I love Iowa City and what I've seen on Des Moines (gf is from there). I'd like to attend Carver, but I ****ing hate Mount Vernon and Cedar Rapids.

Sure, I'll help you write your essay!:p

It's in a great college town with a lot more to offer (arts & culture, etc) than you would expect for a city of its size (especially in Iowa.)

Big Ten athletics

Great facilities

Friendly People

CELLS

Reasonable cost of living.

Whats so bad about Cedar Rapids? It is small but it isn't that bad is it?

What is so good about Iowa City?

I like the atmosphere at IC --- it's very "health aware"

People are always out running and eating at organic shops or very healthy meals in restaurants. Adults and college kids are out sitting under trees reading books on religion and philosophy. It was also voted one of the most intellectual towns.

CR is small and smells of corn processing plants, especially when the wind is blowing and there really isn't that much to do there --- movies and Walmart is about it.

Yeah, Iowa City has a great intellectual environment. In terms of percentage of the population with B.S. and percentage of the population with PhD, it is one of the top 1 or 2 cities in the country. Other rankings:

Which ranking did you use?

How is the transportation system?

What outdoors activities are there to do?

Has anyone else noticed how Iowa's CELLS setup is reminiscent of Harry Potter? Incoming students are sorted into one of four "communities". Sometimes these communities compete against eachother in intramural sports. Finally if you're like me and neither of your parents are doctors you could be considered a mud blood.

I went to undergrad there. Iowa City is an incredible place. It is a very liberal & intellectual bastion in the middle of the cornbelt.

It is a upper-middle class city with a lot great restaurants, plenty of running paths, nice campus, great independent bookstore, theater, a casino within 30 miles, reasonable cost of living, an organic food coop, kind of like a Berkeley without the grit.....I could go on.

You can pm me if you have any questions about it.
