How come I read all these different schools with the precursor UCLA? Does UCLA have many medical schools or something? Two that come to mind are UCLA Drew, UCLA Geffen but I believe I've seen others. What's up with that?

omg, i think this is the 1 millionth thread asking the same question. ucla medical school has 3 separate (separate applications, separate adcoms) programs....

ucla/westwood- ucla all 4 years, 121 spots, "regular" program

ucla/drew- ucla first 2 years, drew second 2 years, for those whose mission is to work with the underserved, 24 spots.

ucla/uc riverside- uc riverside for undergrad plus first 2 years of med, ucla for second 2 years, apply out of high school, 24 spots.

Thanks. In the years I've used SDN, I haven't seen any of the threads asking this question but maybe because I was not close to applying. Thanks for the clarification.

geffen refers to the ucla school of medicine. david geffen gave ucla a lot of money so they renamed their school after him. for example, to be correct you would say david geffen school of medicine at ucla instead of just ucla. :D

The renaming of the Med School was pretty recent, like 2-3 years ago.

That's so random, but I think nowadays, any college will care more about it in fear of lawsuits. Get DSL for your apt if you wanna avoid UCLA's network.

That wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that you GO TO Geffen, would it?

Cause I thought it was funny.

Does attending the Drew program restrict your choices of post graduate specialities? Meaning, do I HAVE TO (or will most everybody in the program) do something along the lines of family practice in underserved populations? Or is it considered significant training for anything?

Is this program more for underrepresented minorities? Should I already have demonstrable evidence of interest in this sort of thing to be considered?

Sorry for all the questions.. I'm just wondering if it is worth applying there or not if you are a traditional med school applicant

Doesn't Drew keep getting their training accredidation pulled? I think that there general surgery program was under the gun recently. if this is true, seems pretty sketchy to me.
