I've seen a lot of post here about the wonderful lifestyles and pays of Dermatologists and Opthalmologists. What about surgery?
What are the pros and cons of being a surgeon? And do you guys know how much do they make in different surgical subspecialties (i.e. cardiothoracic, plastic, etc...)?

didn't you know? you can't talk about pay here. if you do, you're automatically only into medicine for the money.

you have to remember that the pay in medicine is terrible, you can make more as a dishwasher salesman, and if you would not do medicine for less than 75k a year you are complete bastard.

and even 75k a year is a lot. everyone here lives well on 40k. if you want to live better than that, you're greedy.

its ok to look at salary in every other profession and in fact most people work only to make money. sad but true. but in medicine, its a "higher calling" so money cannot be a factor.

in medicine, the less you want to make, the better doctor you will be. ask anyone on this site. money is not important, even though everyone is sweating their tuition payments. 🙄

surgeons in private practice can make a whole lot, over a million. all those specialties you mentioned easily can make more than a half million. How much you make is very dependant on where you are, who your patient base is, and how much you work.

of course, if you make that much, you should donate all but 50k of that to charity. many people on this site will. because money is evil if you are not spending it on bags of rice for poor people.

for the record, rich people do the vast majority of the donating in this world.

Many posts on this forum are about money. However, I was just curious why noone ever talked about surgery

i think most people won't even touch this post with a 10 foot pole ;P there are people out there that are sooo sensitive about this topic 🙂

Bearpaw... 😀 Good satire.

mdforlife--

I think the average for general surgery is ~250k. Subspecialization usually brings in more bucks. Although, you have to be careful...a lot of subspecialists (neuro, c-t, transplant) are employed by academic medical centers, meaning that they are also considered faculty. They participate in research and teaching, and they don't make a ton of money. I watch Trauma: Life in the ER pretty regularly, and 99% of the surgeons you see on that show are either residents or faculty. The faculty guys aren't making as much as their privately practicing counterparts, but I don't think that factors into how much they love their jobs--it doesn't get much more exciting than emergency surgery, and maybe that's why they don't mind the lower pay.

Obviously, there are ways of making a lot more money than the average trauma surgeon if that's what you're into.
