been talking with some recruiters and such...anyone in the know on this "no tail" business regarding malpractice coverage? for those is the real working world...how would you quantify it in terms of $$. For example, a site/group that doesn't offer it would be less appealing...but by how much. Can you replace it with something custom from the insurance market?

Tail is usually about 1.5-2.5 (I believe 2.5 is a more realistic number) times your annual malractice premium. It is completely offensive that you pay malpractice, see a patient on one day and are covered by that malpractice, and if you quit the next day, and don't pay tail, that patient encounter is no longer covered....

It is a big enough deal that's it would be a deal breaker for me.

Take care,

Yeah, it should be a deal breaker. Statistically new grads tend not to stay in their first job for more than a few years, but if tail is not covered you are essentially an indentured servant until you save up enough to pay it off (~$50k). No new employer will hire you with uncovered patient visits hanging over your head so you can't really say "screw it, I'll just leave and go uncovered." Any serious group knows that they need to provide tail and if they won't that should tell you something about them.
