Hey guys..just wondering.. is it better to apply in June with a 3.1 ish science, 3.3 overall gpa, ( 30 Mcat, straight 10's ), or wait till late july after summer school and apply with a 3.25 ish something? I called a few schools and got really unclear answers to this question, so im not really sure what to do. Is it possible to file my lower gpa in june, then update my grades later on in summer when i get secondaries ? i figure the summer grades will be updated with the schools im sending my secondaries to by the time they start granting interviews anyways, right? any advice appreciated!!

I would apply right away in June and then update it during the summer. Your numbers are fine, MCAT is great. Definitely apply early.

I would wait until July. You'll still be way early.

Bad advice. Apply on the first day. You can send the updated transcript directly to the school after the application has been processed.

You may get in earlier with lower stats than later.

I think applying early wouldn't hurt. I think the MCAT score makes up for the GPA.

If you waited for your summer grades you'd get them at least 6 weeks before the August MCATers recevied their scores and you would still be relatively early.

Last summer I faced the same dilemna with a lower MCAT (27). For DO schools, I could either apply in June or wait until the end of the summer (mid August) when my grades for Ochem would be replaced. Several ppl on SDN told me to apply in June and then update the schools with my transcripts, but I was skeptical, and still am. I figured it's all about how the numbers appear, and if they saw my lower GPA earlier, I would have a harder time getting an interview than if they saw a higher GPA later.
However, your MCAT is high enough that you should be fine. In fact, I think if you went to a competitive undergrad you might get into some MD schools.

Alternatively you could decide which schools you are going to apply to and call them an ask if they actually re-evaluate candidates when new grades are submitted as opposed to just adding it to their file and more or less ignoring it (I'd phrase that differently though).

Apply to those school and call them when your grades are released (if they are good) and tell them you just kicked some ass and you want them them to know that your grades will be going up (again, I'd probably phrase that differently)

If you get the impression that some schools won't actually take your file into reconsideration, you can apply to the ones that wil,l then, when the grades come out, you can apply to the rest of them. Yes, you can do that, but the aacomas fee will be a little higher for those extra schools ($30-50 depending on how many you apply to)

AAACK!! why am I helping you, I haven't gotten in yet and I've been at this for 4 years (1st year trying for D.O., which I think I'd like better) You better not take my spot 😛

I agree with you and HunterGatherer. July is still too early compare to the Aug MCAT takers whose apps complete in Oct-Nov. I rather wait for one month and show them the higher GPA than give them the low one and then update it. Think about it, most schools still interview in Feb-Mar. Your app complete in July, with you 3.2 GPA and 30 MCAT, you have a decent shot for DO schools. If you have everything they need, you'll have some interviews for sure. Again, I'm not adcom, but at least, your chance is high. 🙂

I got into all three schools I interviewed at with a 3.3 overall and a 3.0 science and a 30Q (9PS, 10 Bio, 11 V) and I applied in July. I'd say apply in June or July - I don't think it will really matter. You will have competitive numbers with the MCAT for an interview. At every interview the interviewers commented on the competitiveness of my MCAT. *shrugs* I mean at some schools the average MCAT is a 23 or 24.

*disclaimer* - my GPAs are skewed by one REALLy bad year. I had >3.2 Science and >3.4 overall most semesters...so I don't know if that mattered.

I would apply in June, and on the very first day. This way you'll prob. be getting some of your sec. apps. by mid. July.

Also, you are assuming that you'll get all A's during the summer, right. I wouldn't.

Everyone talks about "the very first day" but there seems to be some confustion as to what day that is exactly. Does it change from year to year? More specifically, when is the first day you can start to fill out our application, and when is the first day you can hit the submit button?

Processing begins on June 1st. And you can probably fill the application out on-line before that and then just send it on the 1st.

I'd would say that there probably isn't much difference between applying on the first day, or sometime during the first week or so. But who knows.

Yeah, that's pretty much the way it goes with all of the centralized application services. I know the AMCAS app was available online sometime in early May, at which time you could begin completing it and rounding up your transcripts and getting them sent in. Then June 1st was the first day you could submit your completed app. Like the previous poster said, I think you're golden as long as you submit within the first week or so.

thanks for the feedback guys...it leaves me with a tough decision to make...but what it boils down to is, will the schools get a updated gpa before they start granting interviews? i know im assuming ill get an A in summer school, but its only bc' im taking notoriously easy ( but still 300 level ) science classes to pick up the gpa a little bit. if i go ahead and apply in June, get my secondaries around July, with summer school ending around july 6, is it possible to just update my grades right along with my secondaries? if so, i can just apply early...but as some of you say, it might just be better to apply in july with a slightly better gpa. i know for CCOM, my top choice, the avg. sci gpa is hovering around a 3.3. to a 3.4, but with a 25- 26 mcat. im hoping my mcat will make up for my dip in the gpa...i'm going to call CCOM today and see if they play this "updating grade" game. thanks for the help guys!

1. You can send the transcript through the application service (longest time to process)

2. You can send the transcript directly to the school (best method)

3. You can bring the transcript with you to your interview
