When do you have to apply for J1/H1 Visa for NRMP?

So as IMG applicant,

lets say I submit my application by Dec.1. Is this also the time when I submit the type of visa I want to match on? Or do I do this later on, when I rank my choices in February?

When you enter your basic information into ERAS for your application, you'll be asked if you require a visa and if so, what type(s) you'll be looking for. You can indicate both an H and a J visa if you want. Then, when you interview at programs you should clarify with them what type of visa they will be sponsoring for you. You don't actually apply for the visa until after the match or after you sign a pre-match contract (since the visa is dependent on you actually having a job).
