to med school? is it true that the sooner you apply, the better chance you have of getting in?
what do i need to be doing right now if i want to apply the first day the application comes out? should i start asking for letters of rec? should i start working on my personal statement?
should i have my transcripts sent anywhere?

with AMCAS, the app is available starting may1, but you can't submit until jun1. you can fill it out during that month, send in transcripts to AMCAS (address provided in the app) as soon as available, and get your LORs in order. you should start your PS in march or so. it took me forever to finish mine up after going through a total of 9 overhauls. and submitting earlier is usually better.

Does AMCAS begin downloading the applications the first day they accept them? I remember reading somewhere that they didn't download the first apps until the middle of June or July or something. Anybody know for certain?

Once you submit, your AMCAS application goes on line to be verified, meaning they have to cross check your application with your transcript along with some other stuff. You can print out the transcript request form on the AMCAS application page and get that to your school before you submit your AMCAS. If you submit around early June, it'll take about 1-2 weeks for your application to get verified, but being that early won't matter much since schools won't send their secondaries until they get them updated anyway. If you submit your application by the time the application rush starts, it'll take longer, especially if you incorrectly entered a lot of transcript information.
