Hi everyone,

I am thinking about getting myself a copy of the MSAR as a late Christmas gift; however, I won't be applying until the summer. Will there be a new version out by then containing data from the current application cycle, or is the current version (so-called "2006-2007") the one to go for? I.e., will the current version be outdated by the time I am ready to apply?

Thanks and happy holidays!

The current one came out over the summer, arround July I believe.

If you are applying next cycle, I'd just wait to get the new version (assuming they update it annualy)

It's supposed to come out every Spring, but this year it was a little late.

I doubt it can be out before May because AAMC will not receive the information they need to show the stats for each school for the applicants of 2006 entering class. So, to get one that is updated then you should wait.

The 2006-2007 book is for those of us applying now. You'll want the 2007-2008 version, which will come out in spring 2006. In the meantime, you can probably get a copy of the current MSAR to look at from your school library or pre-med club, or from older friends who are applying this year. You can also start working on your PS, asking profs for LORs, and obtaining unofficial copies of ALL post-secondary transcripts so that you're ready to go in May when AMCAS opens. 🙂

If you want to spend your money now, get a subscription to USNews' rankings. It's $15, it will be active for a year, they have a lot of the same info as the MSAR (but some stuff is missing), they'll update it about the same time as the MSAR (I think, can anyone confirm this?), and you'll get 2 editions for the price of one.
Or just send me the money. I can use some dish detergent and will appreciate your contribution.

As I said before, a new MSAR usually comes out in Spring and the next one will only have info from 2005 applicants. The current 2006-2007 version only has info from 2004.

I just checked on this and unfortunately they thought of that and the subscription expires March 31, just in time for the update, I'd imagine. I'm just going to wait until new versions of that and the MSAR come out and get both at that time. Thanks for all the replies!

Those bastards! Here I was thinking I was so clever.... Oh well, if you get it on April 1st you should have plenty of time to make your decision for the next admissions cycle. Good luck.

this year's MSAR was available prior to June 1, I'm quite sure - I had it shipped like 2nd day air 😛
