Earlier to make sure you have the right prereqs. Some schools have extra ones

junior year is when you should start caring about the MCAT
 
what do you mean "looking at"? this isn't undergrad. they're not going to have a weekend event for everyone to check out the dorms and cafeterias.

you can pick up a book like MSAR at any point and start getting a feel for where you think you'll be competitive or where you'd like to apply. it doesn't really matter when you do it, but it's probably best to do sometime before you apply.
