when to apply for the loan?

hi,
i would like to get information regarding the time as to when we should apply for the loan if one is to join NYU.I had called up the university and they told that since i will be applying for a private loan,june will be the best time to do so.is there anybody joining NYU who can help me out with this question?willl be really glad for all the help.
