Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but I got my wage statements in the mail a couple of days ago, and I've never filled out taxes before. When's the due date, and where can I find the forms? Any help would be much appreciated.

Taxes are due April 1st. You can download the forms at http://www.irs.gov/

If you're applying for financial aid, try to file them this week. Personally I find it easiest to use TurboTax, which is just www.turbotax.com . They have a free version as well as pay versions, and they guide you through the whole process.

are you a student? do your parents claim you as a dependent? If so, and your wages are below a certain amount (go to irs site to find out) you can file 1040-EZ. I filed that last year since I was still dependent on my parents. It was EZ! But this year i have all sorts of stuff to fill out-- 'cause I have retirement funds! How did I suddenly get so old?

If you are independent from your parents and have a salary below 50k (there may be other requirements) you may qualify for some sort of free tax preparation... check out the IRS site. I am filing mine with the help of H&R Block.

Technically taxes aren't due until April 17th, 2006. However, it is generally recommended to get them in as soon as possible in order to get the best shot at good aid from your school or the government. Aid given by schools vary, so if you are fortunate enough to have multiple acceptances you can use this to narrow down your choices. It is possible to do taxes on paper forms (available at any public library), but it is much easier to do them on the computer. I would recommend buying Turbo Tax (for Mac & PC); this program walks you through the process with video. It's as easy as finding a box on your W2 form and inputting it into the program. You can use it to submit your taxes online and then in the future you can reuse the previous year's taxes, making the process that much easier. (Turbo Tax also comes with a family license meaning that it can be installed on multiple computers with no problems.)

I filed the 1040-EZ last year and I wasn't a dependent. Just check the rules. It really is easy!

Thank you all very much. 🙂 Yup, I'm a student and claimed as a dependent. I've downloaded a 1040 EZ to have a look at it, and I'll also look into this turbotax site.
