I haven't read through every posting to see if anyone has started a thread for Jefferson Medical College class of 2008, but I'm going to start one any way! Just wanted to get to know my future classmates. I'll start-

Name: Lindsey
Locale: San Francisco, CA
Education: University of California, San Diego (B.S. Animal Physiology and Neuroscience)
Random Info: yes, I'm from california, no I cannot surf . . . but I do say dude 😎

haha congrats lindsey.

i like to give props to all people from norcal!

tho i am not a jeffersonian i think a lot of the people (including myself) who have applied there just want to hear something from them...anything. even a rejection haha.

you must have been an awesome applicant to have gotten in early from them.

and the question isnt whether you say dude or not...do you say hella? 😀

Fyi, I'm an ms1 at jefferson, also from the west coast. it is good you know SDN, since it is useful to read later on in med school.

Let me know if anyone has questions about the new curriculum or required materials.
best,
Ben

I am a Jeffersonian hopeful. I have been on the alternate list since december. It is definitely my first choice, one reason being that I am currently living in philadelphia right now. Cross your fingers for me and hope that I get an acceptance in the near future (at least before my apartment lease runs out May 31).

Hey future and possibly future jeffersonians. Im almost positive Ill be going to Jeff next year. Im here in Philly but Im kinda clueless as to how Im going to get to class next year. Im too close to drive but too far to walk. In case you dont know, philly has a crappy sub-sytem and Im not crazy about taking a bus everyday to class. Anyways, Jefferson is a really great school with lots of cool docs.

I LOVE Philly!! been here for almost 5 years and options aren't tired yet. Great cuisine, bar/lounge scene within blocks of Jeff campus... Also, there is no shortage of similar ugrad/grad age students all over the city---I think it actually beats Boston, definitley in terms of Med studs (Jeff, Temple, Drexel, Penn, Pcom, Temple Podiatric, Temple Dental, Penn Dental,.......)

Hello,
My name's Becca, and I will probably be at Jefferson next year. Right now I'm living in Oakland, CA and working at UCSF, but I went to college at Bryn Mawr, so I'm pretty familure with philly.
And i can't surf either. I'm very excited about jefferson, just a bit concerned because I've heard its a bit competative with the H/P/F. But I love the block scheduling.
Best of luck hopefulls! If I get into Northwestern I will give you my spot!

shout out! I was accepted this past Friday (got the call from Dr. Callahan early Friday evening) and am going there barring all natural disasters. That poor woman, I definitely screamed her ears off out of sheer joy. I can't believe I got in. I haven't received anything in the mail yet and am a little paranoid because I hope they don't change their mind 🙂 Anyways, I'm in Philly now (have been here for 5.5 years, LOVE it) and will probably live on-campus next year for the sake of simplicity.

There are so many things I'm psyched about for next year. I was totally stoked by the fact that Jeff has a pool! I'm also hoping we'll benefit from the class of 2007 already having gone through the new MS1 curriculum before we get there. My interview group (fellow interviewees) was definitely the most pleasant and friendly of the interviews I had, so I'm looking forward to meeting my new classmates.

Woohoo!

I'll see you all there in the fall. In Oregon now, bored and ready for Philly. Good idea starting this thread.

There's certainly a decent chance I'll be there next year. I had a great impression from the interview day. Anyone hear if Jeff. has a second look?

Checked my Jefferson student email for the first time today. It was an awsome feeling.😀

I find it interesting how positive we all sound (in comparison to the other threads I have read). I checked my Jeff email too, lots of crude, but still very cool! Whats the general consensus in the med community about Jefferson (I hadn't even heard of it being from the West Coast)?

Probably the only reason that Jefferson doesn't have better name recognition is that there isn't an undergrad or sports program associated with it. It's been around as long as the Ivies, and contributed probably more famous and accomplished physicians. This considered, Jeff is probably one of the best schools in the country.

I spoke with a department chief for one of the major NYC teaching hospitals. He was the one who told me to go to Jefferson; said it would help me get into a top residency. My two mentors for job shadowing also placed Jeff at the top of their "respect" lists. Considering neither of them went there, I took this very seriously.

Jonathan Letterman, Algernon Jackson, Gallo (the doctor who codiscovered/characterized HIV as the AIDS virus) and several other very important docs & scientists came out of Jefferson.

It has more living alumni in medical practice than any other school, which also means a chance to make connections that could lead to a great practice. I've run into several alumni & students, all of whom said they couldn't imagine a school with a "tighter" professional community.

It's situated in the best neighborhood (in terms of clinical and social opportunities) in Philly.

So I think it's really the place to be. I'm happy to be accepted there.

When I read things like this, it makes me want to go there even more than I already do (if thats even possible). Please take me off the waitlist Dr. Callahan.

I just wanted to say how awesome of a school jefferson is. I have lived in philly for 5 years and volunteered there where all of the staff is so friendly. PHilly is great as well. It is s much fun, this city will really grow on you. Plus Jefferson is in such an optimum location between Rittenhouse square and Old City. I will be going to med school elsewhere next year, but I wish you the best.

I've been really waffling between Jefferson and GW but recently my gut has been telling me to go with Jeff...and I'm getting totally psyched about it after reading all these awesome posts!

Hi guys, just wanted to welcome you to Jefferson. I'm an MSII and I have been very happy with my experience so far. A couple of responses to the posts so far:

I haven't found the H/P/F thing competitive at all. Since there is just a percentage cut off for Honors and for passing, there is really only competition between you and the exam. I think the school got it's "competitive" reputation from when they used to have number grades.

Jeff used to be ranked #1 in the country by the "all-knowing" USNews, but when they changed the criteria the rankings all changed as well. Apparently they used to try to rank "best medical education" (how they did that, I have no idea) and now they focus more on research funding. Regardless, the education really is very good especially in the clinical years (at least that's what I've heard). I have heard many, many accounts of residency directors really liking Jeff grads. Plus Philly really is a great city (although the East Coast has been pretty cold this year.)

I think there is a second look. In April perhaps?

Good luck to all of you on the waitlist (show your interest, this is supposed to help a lot) and I suppose I'll see some of you next year!

Wow. Now I'm even more pleased with my decision.

great thread.

I'm applying this June, and Jefferson is at the top of my list. Though, I'm a little worried about getting in w/ my stats. 3.5 gpa and 29 MCAT, lots of inner city hospital work (including spanish interpreter for docs)

Those of you that got in, would you mind posting your stats or your "friends" stats that got in? 😉 Any w/ 29 MCATs? Any advice for me applying to this school, and my chances??

Appreciate this so much-- and congrats to all those going next year!!

As far as numbers go, you're fine. These days, getting into most schools isn't just about numbers. As long as your grades and test scores are half way decent, schools will take a closer look at the rest of your application. At this point, the best thing you can do is work on a strong application and powerful personal statement.

I'll PM my numbers to you.

Just checked my Jeff Email for the first time and was quite stunned. I had 675 messages. I worked at Jeff for 2 years 2 years ago. I guess they never took me off the mail server. In any case, one of the last emails was from IT telling me that I would no longer be recieving student sent emails. This was like last week. I think its funny that I just got kicked off and now I need to call them up to explain this mess. Sorry about this post. It dosnt sound that funny as a read it back to myself. 😴

i was just wondering if anyone knew the answers to these questions...

does jeff substitute a semester of biochem for orgo 2 instead. god i dont want to take that class..

also, anyone know what its step 1 avg was? match lists..etc

thanks

I don't know about substituting biochem for ochem, but FYI most school require both (I hated ochem too, but you have to struggle through it . . . not that I found biochem to be much better). I have no clue what their step one scores were, I don't even think you can find those out (its not something that any of the schools I interviewed at gave us). The match list is available (maybe online), I can tell you that Jeff students match VERY well at all the top hospitals and in all the specialities.

From the Jefferson website:

"Question: I completed my undergraduate work at Kalamazoo College in Michigan. There the organic chemistry sequenced was only two quarters (totaling 6.6 semester hours) with biochemistry acting as a third quarter. Would I meet your entrance requirement?

Answer: Academic calendars vary from institution to institution, thus we require one year of each: biology, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and physics, each with lab. "

This answer is a bit ambiguous, so you might want to call the admissions office. They're pretty helpfull and should be able to answer your questions.

I don't know about board ave., but from the match list, it must be pretty darned good.

Just curious if any of you folks know whether we get put up with a student during the 2nd look or whether we need to get a hotel. Any ideas? Second looks seem expensive.

according to the info I got, once you say you are going to the second look they will send you a student host list. hope to see you there!

 Hey I just wanted to introduce my self to all ya Jeffersonians. I've been reading this thread and getting seriously psyched. I have to decide between Jeff and U of Kentucky. My head (read pocketbook) says UK, but my gut and my heart are calling me to Jefferson. Everything I've read here is telling me exactly what I want to hear.
At any rate, I'll definately be at second look day.

Name: Celeste
Age: 27
Education: Earlham College
Current location: Lexington. Kentucky

Hey All!
Does anyone have misgivings about going to the second look because of the price? I'm in CA right now, and I'd really like to go and meet people, but there don't seem to be any cheep flights. So I'm not sure if its worth it because as of right now I will definatly be going there, so its not like I need to make that decision or anything.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how helpful going to the second look weekends really is?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go just so I can harass people (ie the housing office and the financial aid office) in person. plus I am hoping that they will give us some good info. the prices I have found so far are like $203, but the good news is the Southwest is going to start flying into Philly come may!

I know!!! I'm so excited about Southwest flying out there!! It was such a pain going to school in Philly and not having any of the less expensive airlines go out there. If only they would have a direct flight from philly to oakland I would be in heaven!!

Do any of you know when they start sending out financial aid stuff? Do we have to wait till april or do they just start working on it once you get it all handed in? Its going to be a bit of work getting my dad to finish the taxes completely so I can hand in the signed copies.

Regarding Jeff financial aid stuff, I received my packet about 1-2 wks after being accepted. You don't need to wait until you get the paperwork though - beyond starting the FAFSA, you can fill out the other Jeff required forms online.

http://www.jefferson.edu/financialaid/home/jmc_students.cfm

Click on Apply for Financial Aid online and follow the instructions form there. Your login information is the same as it was for the secondary. Hope this helps!!
