Hey everyone, I'm finishing up my secondary for UCLA, but the last essay question "Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What experiences have led you to this goal?" has me kind of stuck. I mean, what am I supposed to write? "I'll be a doctor?" 😕 Obviously that's not what they want to hear! What did other people write? I just need some kind of direction to take this thing. I understand schools like to ask this on interviews too, so probably a good idea if I think of something better than "uh...I'll be practising as a [insert school] med alum?" Thanks a lot!

Have you thought about what kind of doc you want to be? This is one way they can judge whether you know anything about medicine. In certain specialties you won't even be done training in 10 years.

I wrote about how I'd have graduated, completed a residency in the specialty I'm currently interested in, and gotten some experience as an attending in that field. I'm interested in being a military physician, so I discussed that, too.

Even though in ten years you may be a doctor, you may be a parent, a spouse, something other than MD. Sure, let them know what setting (academic/private practice/etc) you want to practice in, but be human. Stand out.

Thanks a lot guys! Those were great pointers. I still don't think I wrote anything good, but better than nothing! I'm not holding my breath for UCLA, just kind of a dream-school.

i have the boards examination letter in my hand and I am rolling a blunt the size of a cuban cigar to get F**KED UP!!!

Hmm...I wrote that I saw myself as an inpatient at either a psychiatric hospital or at an alcohol rehab facility. Maybe that's why I didn't get in? 😕
