I need help and advice on which schools to apply to. My list of schools that I am considering right now are:

Tufts
BU
Harvard
UConn
Columbia
NYU
UPenn
UMaryland
UOP
UCSF
UCLA
USC

I am trying to eliminate some schools in my consideration. My overall GPA is 3.51 and my DAT scores were 23-academic and 16-PAT...I am a MA resident. Does anyone have any input on which schools to definately eliminate and not recommend...or which schools should be on the top of my list?!

If you are trying to eliminate some schools, you might want to eliminate UCLA and UCSF simply because you are not a Cali resident. You do however have a shot because you have an excelent DAT. You might also want to eliminate UConn for the same reason. If you are set on those state schools, then give it a shot, i just suggested those because of your state of residence.

I'd look into UConn before eliminating it. Don't they have some agreement to take students from the other New England states that don't have state dental schools - Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island? There are out-of-state students on this board who have gotten into UConn with good scores as well, so do some research.

Yes...Uconn has an agreement with the new england states to offer lower tuition rates. So I think I am going to keep that one on the list because of the cheaper tuition. I have heard UCLA and UCSF are really hard to get into from out of state. How about the other schools? The private ones? Thanks people...

I big factor to consider with the private schools is the cost of attending. At my interview to BU they gave us a price breakdown for one year (tuition, room and board, etc) as $76,000. Otherwise, I think applying to multiple private schools is a good idea.

I forgot to mention that you should consider NSU in your private school list 🙂.

I have too many schools on my list already! Anyways, I want to stay in the Northeast region and Cali. But any more input from anyone would be VERY VERY Helpful? Should i just apply to all 12 schools? Or take out one or two...

If your interviews go well, you should get into almost all of those schools. Consider where you would actually go. Location for me was a big deal so that narrowed my application to just 3 schools and luckily got in all of them.

i agree with with you on UCLA, UCSF, and USC. however, strongly disagree on UCONN. during my interview they told me that UCONN looks very strongly into AA and SCI on the DAT. i would not eliminate UCONN because 1. he has a very good shot at it. 2. its the best dental school (specially for out of staters).

the school that i would eliminate for sure is NYU. OP i know you'd get multiple interview and acceptances and i hardly doubt you'd go to NYU. so why waste your money on them?

Drop Harvard, cause you dont have a chance with that PAT score....and like Jrogoff said, since your not a cali resident, the cali schools will probably be a waste of time and money....but as for the others, you will probably get acceptences from all of them...

If I were you, I'd drop that list and start over again. I'd focus on the 4 or 5 cheapest private schools out there, and then throw in a couple of cheap public state schools that are known for accepting at least a fair amount of out-of-staters, and then add one or two Cali. schools (or Harvard or whatever) to the list.

That should equate to 5+2+2= 9, which is a good amount of schools. Your AA on the DAT will help you greatly, so only choose schools that you could actually envision attending. Anything else is just a waste of time and money.

You may want to reconsider UOP. They are known for wanting really high DAT scores and while your AA is really good....your PAT might be considered too low for them. Call them first to get advice from them...that way you'll know if you can save some money ahead of time.
Definitly apply to UCSF, UCLA, and USC in California.

Concur

Price vs location, I'm willing to go to school in the dump, if it means saving money in the long run.

I used the book from the ADEA to narrow my list down - Official Guide to Dental Schools. It has a lot of stats that aren't included on the schools websites like out of state applicant acceptance. After looking over it I realized more than a 1/4 of the schools i was planning on applying to were going to be a waste of time and money.
