While in New Orleans for mardi gras this february, I couldn't help wondering if Tulane's hospital (by virtue of its proximity to the french quarter) has more patients presenting with alcohol poisoning than any other ER in the country.

It seemed very logical at the time (I wasn't very sober), so I just have to ask if any one has any knowledge or decisive info on this...

One of the doctors in my father's practice used to tell me about her residency in Arizona, near a Pima Indian reservation. She said that alcoholism is endemic there, due to a genetic lack of tolerance for EtOH among the tribe. She said that there were related trauma cases daily.

There are probably hard statistics about that somewhere on the www. Please post if you come across any, I'd be curious...

Isn't Charity the public hospital of NO?

yup. that'd be where all the etoh poisoning victims would go. and charity is covered by both lsu and tulane.

pretty much any ER you go to in a major city is gonna have a grip of alcohol related cases. For most homeless people (many are alcoholics), the ER is their first line of healthcare...and usually they're the first ones seen because docs don't want them going into withdrawl...i've even seen them give alcohol drips during surgery at san francisco to prevent withdrawl symptoms...anyhow, that's just my opinion.
