If you know about any Florida MD school's gym, please describe and rate it. Also, if you can compare any that would be helpful. Thanks.

I like the way you think.

Took about 11 months for him to get the guts to squeeze this beauty out.

Hahaha yeah I'll have to agree. Sometimes, with all else being equal, you gotta decide based on what's important to you.

For the OP, I'll bet you can't go wrong with any of the big schools down there. I know U. Florida has a pretty solid med school and Miami is pretty decent too. I'll bet they both have stellar gyms, but I'm just speculating. IF you could somehow squeeze out some sort of job in their sports med departments on the side or something, you could probably get away with working out in the athletic facilities. I probably don't need to tell you how nice their football gyms probably are.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that you'll be an orthopod.

By the way, it's a violation of the TOS to double-post. Expect one of these threads to be deleted.

Good gym = lots of hot girls = more sex = less stress = better studying = better grades

All leads to a better residency.

I think the man is right on track. 👍

UF has Southwest Rec which has 6 basketball courts constantly running and a huge weight room. This gym is shared by undergrad/grads so its always got something going on.

UM is in downtown Miami, so there isn't as much of a gym as UF's. However, from what I understand, they just built a building where the top floor has gym equipment right near the Med center.

USF, is like UF's but not as big and FSU's is probably just as big as UF's but I am not as familiar with these.

i heard and i believe that UM just had a new gym built.

UF has by far the best facilities (including the gym) out of FSU, USF, and UM. There is no question to that. UF has more than one gym, Southwest Rec, the Racquetball club, and another heavy duty gym in the Stephen C. O'Connell center, where the basketball team plays.

UF has the best facilities in Florida because they have the largest endowment of all three major Florida schools. They also have the largest alumni and fan base in Florida because UF is the oldest school and graduates and has been graduating far more students than any of the other three schools. Thus because UF has the largest alumni base they also have the most money out of all the schools in Florida.

For example, Doak Campell Stadium was built from state tax funds, on the other hand, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field was built purely from donations and the schools endowment.

UF is the best and there is no comparison. I am an alum.

The total UF endowment reached 835 million in July of 2005.

I've attended both FSU and UF, and of the two, FSU has the better gym- better hours, more classes, and way more equipment. Both are pretty darn good though, and I'd guess that any decent sized school has a pretty good gym. Try searching individual school webpages. Ours has a webcam.

Ehhh I doubt FSU has a superior gym. More than likely they are equal. But the med schools are definitely not equal.

UF Med > than FSU Med.

UF = established med school

FSU = med school that is three or four years old, with no hospital attached to it.

UF definitely has the better overall package. Shands + Southwest Rec + heavily research based school.

there's time in med school to work out??? no way!

Any input on how far each gym is from the respective med school?

Oh boy! I didn't know anyone will consider the 'coolness' of the gym as one criteria for choosing a med school. Oh, premeds! 🙄

Shands is where the UF med school is located which is on the south side of the campus. You can walk but its a pretty far walk from Shands to SW Rec. You would most likely take a 5 minute bus ride to SW from Shands.

http://campusmap.ufl.edu/

See for yourself.

Both are on campus. Fsu's is about a block from the med school. UF's, IIRC, is less than a mile from Shands.

Inaccurate and irrelevant to the question. Would rant further about how I've met people at UF that based their identity on belittling other schools, but I've never let myself get catty on these forums, so why start now?🙂

I'm very pleased with UF's facilities. However, they're not very close to the teaching hospital. You'll either want to take a warm up jog or a bus.

I don't know much about the other Florida schools. If it makes a difference, I'm willing to bet UF has more money, given recent events, for improving the facilities their athletes also train at.

I've used USF's and FSU's, and I've seen UF's, and I'd have to say FSU's blows the others away. I can't speak for UM, but I'd have a hard time imagining it is better.

All I can think is how typical this sounds coming from a UF student 🙄
I've used USF's and FSU's gym, and I've seen UF's. FSU's gym is definitely superior to both. I've never seen UM's, so I can't say, but I'd find it hard to believe that it could be better, simply because the school is so much smaller.

Maybe the UF > FSU was a little bit harsh, but the rest of my post was just stating obvious facts. Thereby I retract my statement UF > FSU, except in football and bball 😉

FSU has no hospital attached while UF has one of 5 Level 1 trauma centers in the state. Can you really argue that point? It might be irrelevant to the current thread but it's something to think about when making a med school decision.

Wow. Most random criteria for wanting to attend a certain medical school ever. Even the 'hottest women' thread seems like it holds more weight than this.

I'm sure FSU has a better gym. Also, the med school is 6 years old (opened in May 2001).

Also, Doak was not completely paid for with tax $. The University Complex, which makes up a large part of the stadium was a gift from booster money (http://www.seminole-boosters.com/seminoleboosters/renderpage.asp?pageid=2453)

And that would be why they really don't train med students at Tallahassee Memorial. Most students end up spending the last two years somewhere else in Florida.

As for the football and basketball comment, I'll give you basketball, but football's definitely season-dependent.

No sir!

Good gym = lots of hot girls = more sex = STDs = more hospital visits = less study time = more stress = bad grades = scramble for residency (or no residency)

Hmm...sounds to me like the wrong track to be on.

I've been going to FSU's gym, the leach center, regularly since I was a freshman.. GREAT gym! I'm gonna miss it, it's staff, and the familiar faces of my fellow gym rats 🙁 That was my 2nd home!

I'll be at UF fall .. time to see what the "gator nation" has to offer

Oh, and yeh UM's medical school has a pretty decent gym occupying the top 2 floors of the parking garage right next to the hospital (i.e., outside of their undergrad campus and primarily targeted towards med students and staff specifically). Hah I don't know whether or not this thread intended to be comical, but believe it or not that actually factored a teency bit in to my decision making process (although in the end I chose UF). Anyways UM's medical school gym's website is http://wellness.med.miami.edu/ . FSU's gym site is http://fsu.campusrec.com/leach/

School Comparsions thread and therefore moving to Pre-Allo. Allopathic medical students read and post in Pre-Allo and can follow and post there.

Ive heard that UM's gym at main campus is pretty awesome but is more a classic gym. UF has weights/cadio, raquetball, basketball, and indoor soccer. UFs gym system is fantastic with lots of different gyms and contrary to what has been said, fantastic hours (7am-1am is sufficient). I am a grad student at the hospital now and bike to the gym (takes 7min) or you can take a bus which runs every 10 min and is a 5 min ride.

Actually UM's wellness center is brand new. Ok, that doesn't automatically make it "better" than others, but I can't imagine someone taking a tour and not finding it sufficient. Best part about it is that even at peak times it's not crowded at all. There's a virtual tour on the website that is actually very accurate..

http://wellness.med.miami.edu/x9.xml#

Good luck!

Inaccurate. Even if Ben Griffin Hall was built through endowment $$, the state of Florida matches UF endowment gifts through the Florida Major Gift Trust Fund. Therefore, a decent chunk of the $$ in UF's endowment is actually from the state of Florida.

very nice, i stand corrected.

I didnt see a basketball court in the Miami Wellness Center virtual tour. Is this accurate?

UM's gyms are both very nice (this is the only school I can speak for). The med campus has a brand new wellness center occupying the top two floors of the parking garage for the new clinical research building. It is located about a 10 minute walk from the building where classes are held. It has tons of cardio equipment, more than sufficient free weights, and cable weight machines galore. It also has like 3 multipurpose rooms used for a variety of fitness classes like spinning for the ladies (or gentlemen, I suppose...). Additionally it has a real awesome like 180 degree view of the miami skyline and 836 expressway. Plus the gym is almost always empty...there are more trainers lounging around than people working out, seriously. You'll never have to wait for equipment, because there's like 4 times the number of machines etc. that people even use.

The undergrad campus in coral gables has a three story wellness center with everyone you need. Huge weight room with both free weights and machines, lots of cardio machines too. It also has a center court (which can be used for volleyball or other indoor stuff), two huge fitness rooms (for things like karate training, yoga, etc.), an indoor swimming pool and sauna, indoor (A/C!) track on the third floor, three indoor full basketball courts, four outdoor basketball courts, several tennis courts, like 10 raquetball rooms/courts, a few squash courts, and a huge intramural field right outside that's often used for running, football, baseball or pickup soccer games (a favorite of all the international students there, of course). What more could people want?

Case in point, I'm sure the facilities are more than adequate at any of the major schools....unless you want to be picky with minutia like "oh yeah, well school X has FIVE outdoor basketball courts instead of four...beat that!!". Really.

I guess the deciding factor does come down to the eye candy...the workout "motivation"...and here is where UM wins. Miami has the absolute BEST looking girls of all the FL. schools....period. I guarantee it. So there you have it, Miami has the best workout environment. Booya.

The Miami gym also overlooks I-95 and out on to the rest of Downtown Miami, you can see the glass windows from the highway. At least from the outside it seems to be quite nice and brand new. UM is also buying Cedars Medical right next door.

Right, as Hurricane95 described, the UM Medical facility is purely weights, cardio, and fitness classes. Awesome facility, IMO. To get some basketball/raquetball/swimming time, you'll have to hop on the metro for a 20m ride south to the main campus.

Ok, this is serious. Ive been accepted to Miami, but a 20 minute ride just to ball is a very serious concern. Please tell me theres a court closer than Coral Gables!

they got ball courts at UM, there just always being used, but they got them. I used to live like 15, aorund the Kendell area. Dude there's plenty of parks in the area, Miami's an active city

You are so right, the girls are just REE_GOD_DAMN_Diculously fine. Its like they painted on them tight ass low rider jeans.😱

UM the med or undergrad campus? Whats the closest basketball court to the Med school?

A public/open court near the med campus will be one of the ones found underneath the elevated expressway. Or at a park. Not sure how "safe" those in the immediate vicinity are, given the area of town. If you've gotta drive 10-15 to get to a good park court, might as well just go to gables. Now, I'm not a basketball player so I may just not know about others in the area, but honestly the gables campus courts are probably your best bet (unless you join a downtown gym with a court). uzzyman is referring to the courts at the gables campus, as there are none on the med campus. Good luck

In the FWIW department USF is opening a gym specifically for the MD students in the MD campus area with a separate room for cardio and free weights and nautilus "type" weight machines; showers, tv's, the works....dont know which other MED SCHOOLS in Florida have a separate gym in the med area.

At USF it is on the other side of campus sort of. The med school is closer to Bruce B Downs while the gym in closer to main campus and school of business and social sciences building on the other side of campus. Not a good walking distance but there are shuttles if you don't have a car.

My bro went to UF so I've seen their facilities for the gym and recreation center and they far out do USF's facilities a million times over.

naw, women weaken legs

and FYI, I'm a woman and I lift weights too

nice assumptions going on here in man-land 😀

Wow. Most random criteria for wanting to attend a certain medical school ever. Even the 'hottest women' thread seems like it holds more weight than this.

Having an easily accessible gym that has all the things you need in a gym is an important quality of life consideration

UF has the best facilities in Florida because they have the largest endowment of all three major Florida schools. They also have the largest alumni and fan base in Florida because UF is the oldest school

FSU had its beginnings in 1844. UF was founded in 1853. I'm sure you could twist the history if you wanted....but that is when the state mandated the western florida school. UF has the largest alumni base because they are one of the top 3 largest schools in the country along with Ohio State and Arizona State.

I know you are a bit biased because you graduated from UF but simmmer down a bit. 😉 Nice facilities doesn't have much to do with endowment usually. If that were the case there would be over 70 schools in the country that have MONSTER gyms compared to UF. It tends to be a display of what the students want as well as size. I'd say that UF probably does have the best gym.The best way to look at it is amount of gym square footage per student. If it is over a foot you will probably be ok. FSU does have a weak one...especially if you do olympic lifting (not allowed)......a lot of people prefer going to the gyms closer to their apartments though. Its completely free which is nice. It does the trick though.

Does UF charge for their student football tickets? I have no clue. I suspect the stadium thing is a little tough to judge considering that FSU's stadium was built in two parts. Before the bowden era it was just a rickety stadium. Then they realized they had to beautify it a bit and tagged the buildings around the outside with that brick.

Don't ask me how I know this....

FSU might be older as an undergrad institution, but I'd say UF has a lot stronger and older more reputated medical program then FSU. Furthermore, its got more well known programs in engineering, science related fields, business, and law then the other major Florida schools.

That said, FSU and UF in some ways are not comparable on the same level. Why?? I guess its like saying Apples and Oranges are the same. They are the same kind of food with different flavors. Similarly both have med schools, but with different focuses.

FSU's med school was built under the charter that it would provide the state with more primary care physicians especially in the northern Florida region where medical practicioners are more scarce bc of the rural nature of many of those places. So while going there doesn't mean that you will for sure end up in PC at a rural setting, don't be surprised if they are shoving these thoughts down your throat to quote friends of mine who go to FSU med.

UF med on the other hand is a big research powerhouse focusing on things like academic medicine, subspecializing, producing clinicians that may be good in PC settings as well as those who may be good for more specialized fields and/or working in more urban settings. They are a mix of everything.

Oh that's awesome!!!! Do the hospitals also have gyms that you can use there?? I know sometimes businesses and work places have separate gyms so if you are like far away you could work out at work itself. Do you know if such a thing exists at say TGH or any of the major hospitals????
