Hey all,

Was wondering if anyone who is currently attending these schools or other applicants who also seriously considered these schools have any input about these three schools:
UConn
Maryland
VCU

I am OOS for all three, but plan to become a resident and pay in-state tuition after a year.
Ultimate goal (as of now) is to specialize - I want to be at a program that is reliable for helping prepare and get students into these programs.
Location is not really a factor, as they are all east coast and that where I want to be!

Any input/opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

I shadowed an oral surgeon last summer who highly recommended uConn if I was looking to specialize. She also noted that she thought VCU didn't put out many specialists in her opinion (I asked about VCU). I also know that VCU does not allow you to switch to in-state (or very rarely does). MD does allow you to switch after 1 year. Hope this helps

Be 100% about the residency thing. Moving from OK to TX was tough work.

I'm at VCU but you should definitely go to UConn. UConn gives you in-state tuition after first year, pass/fail, and medical school curriculum. I think the best dental school for an oral surgeon-to-be is an affordable, pass/fail, medical school curriculum dental school that offers long summers that you can spend studying for CBSE, externing, and researching. This sounds like UConn. If I were in your position, I would go to UConn and wouldn't think twice.

It is extremely helpful to hear the opinion of a professional in the field. I am not from this area, so all of my "connections" are back home and have absolutely no clue about east coast schools/reputations! Thanks so much.

Do you know anything about MD putting out specialists? If so, any clue if it is as high of a percentage as UConn?

Uconn seems a good fit to you if you dont mind location

Thanks! Yes, the location I actually liked. I come from the Midwest and have attended college in NYC. It has been a fun experience, but I honestly would love to be in a suburban setting after college. I love cities, but feel that I would rather visit them than live in them, if that makes sense? Also, I think it would be helpful to have fewer distractions during dental school, with how busy and rigorous it is going to be!

Thanks for your reply! It is good to hear from a current student. I agree with you that those aspects of UConn are placing it at the top of the list. I know you are at VCU, but do you have any insight about Maryland vs. UConn? Perhaps you have heard from other students?

Thank you all for your advice. If anyone else has additional comments, please let me know! And congratulations/good luck to everyone!

go to cheapest school, doesnt matter where u go for specialization. Your mind might change during school so keep that in mind.

UConn is the cheapest school, as you get in-state tuition after the first year. Unless you have a working spouse, who makes a good income, and you buy a home, it would be very difficult to gain residency in the other two states.

Furthermore, UConn has a very strong reputation for specializing.

I kind of find it unnecessary to elaborate on Maryland since UConn would be such a clear choice for me.

Ray Allen, Jim Calhoun, Kemba, Shabazz, rip Hamilton, Aj price, Rudy gay, Hasheem Thabeet are all millionaires for going to Uconn

UConn is a good school but be aware it is run by a pack of arrogant wimps.
