    The Ultimate Post-DAT Poll!

What type of study materials did you find MOST helpful for taking the actual DAT and which do you recommend?

This is a multiple options poll: Please choose one option or several options which were most helpful.

If anybody used any really helpful materials that aren't listed here - please feel free to add them!

Note: This poll implies that you have already taken the DAT and know what you are talking about. If you haven't taken the DAT yet, please refrain from voting until you have taken the DAT and can contribute to this poll!

Also, if the "other" option is chosen.. please post what the DAT study material is!!!

    Thanks!

  Great number of responses so far!!

DAT Achiever seems to be leading the poll so far.. anybody care to describe why?

Is it all the PAT practice tests that make it so helpful?

keep the tips coming - this is great! :D

the only thing i did to prep for the DATs was taking the Kaplan Online Course. They give you ALL materials online and they also mail you a couple of books. I also studied a little of Barron's (#12? on your list?) and took DAT's after about 1.5 months of studying....

got 23/22/21 for AA/TS/PAT... so yeah good luck!

Kaplan = best thing for DATs... my opinion

    22AA 23TS 24 Bio 23GC 22OC 24RC 19PAT 19QR

Everyone says the PAT is way harder than the KAPLAN PAT but i didnt think it was any harder. My score did come out lower (19) vs 20-22 on Kaplan but i feel that was due more to the grading than the actual difficulty.

Honestly, I found the material on the PAT to be easy and this was quite refreshing considering the anxiety I had for this section. DAT achiever was much much much more difficult but it was definately a good thing to have studied off.

For every other section, Kaplan was very helpful (including the QR). The QR on the real DAT is NOT much easier than the QR from Kaplan so expect the same relative difficulty of problems. You will have a little less number crunching but overall it felt the same. I was hoping to do better here but I got nervous and started skipping ALL word problems and answering the easy algerbra/arithmetic problems. I did have time to come back and finish all problems but I must have made some careless mistakes in my frantic pace.

The bio section was ridiculously easy for me, but Its always been my strong point and i realize I may have received some of the easier questions. Again, Kaplan was my most valuable asset for this section. I did read Schaum's but im not so sure it helped me out on anything in particular. When you are taking the DAt you have this feeling of utter familiarity. The whole test reminded me of a Kaplan practice test. I think alot of the questions were exactly the same from Kaplan (worded a little different but easily recognizable).

OC and GC- super easy. Kaplan is awesome for this. I would say that Kaplan goes as far as over preparing you for this section. I know of a couple careless mistakes i made so you want to focus on reading the question carefully and thinking about any tricks to the problem. For E1/SN1 always....and i mean always look for carbocation rearrangements.

Reading Comprehension: Ive been reading the economist (magazine) for about a year now since I really do enjoy politics and economy so my RC is probably pretty decent. On the test I DID read the passage and I would be lost if I skimmed the passage. This is my advice passed on from a friend: Skip the first part of the RC that lets you read the whole passage before seeing any of the questions. Once you click next past this stage...you will have a window that shows the passage on the top half and 1 question at a time on the lower half of the screen. Read the first question. If the first question is a theme/format/style/inference question regarding the whole passage, guess and mark it for later (usually this is not the case for the first question). So now read the question carefully and begin to read the passage until you arrive at the answer for this question. Answer the question....read the new question. Sometimes you will find the new question was covered in something you already read and you can answer this by looking at the specific section. Otherwise proceed and read untill you come to this answer. Continue like this until you come to the end. Youll find that you remember the questions you skipped and when the answer pops into your head you can just go back and answer them real quick.I finished the whole RC section with 12 minutes to spare. All in all, I only practiced RC on the 4 full length Kaplan practice tests. No individual attention was focused here.

The day of the DAT i bought these foam ear plugs. When i took my test i used these ear plugs (33 db noise reduction) and I wore the sound reducing head phones they give u at the center. WIth both of these, I was in a state of silent bliss. I know from my experience at KAPLAN, that hearing other people type...even faintly...drives me crazy and distracts my attention. This worked out very well.

GL, feel free to PM with any questions. The DAT is not very hard. If i could go back and know exactly how to prepare...I think 2 months of correctly concentrated effor would be enough. I spent around 3 but I was also in school for 2 of the months.

DAT achiever was very helpful because it really made me think about the natural science questions but I didn't like how the answer choices were written, it was really too hard for me. I'm glad the real DAT wasn't that hard. PAT on DAT achiever was harder than the real DAT for me, I got 22 on achiever and 20 on the real DAT.

If I could do it all over again I would not have taken the Kaplan tests until the end of my studying. I believe that they are the most similar to the real DAT and the best way to test yourself. It was really discouraging getting 13's and 14's on practice tests the week before I took that DAT.

I think DAT Achiever is just the right material for those aspiring to be one of the 20++ rookies. I'm amazed to realize that some of the difficult problems from its Bio, RC, QR and PAT that freaks many from this forum appeared word for word on my DAT day. Answer choices for one of the tricky Bio question on thermoregulation came out even in the exact order you would see in its sample tests.

I got 24 AA 25 TS 22 PAT, using only my college textbooks, DAT Achiever, and part of Kaplan's blue book.

Thanks burton for earlier alerting me of this great program via this poll.

DAT Destroyer. The DAT is a test independant of the MCAT...you have to respect it and use DAT specific material. MCAT stuff is good if you need loose ends that need to be tied up (certain areas of general chemistry, human physiology), but there is plenty of stuff in the destroyer that is not found in MCAT material. Destroyer is a great combo of oddball questions (often overlooked when studying), basic fundamentals (that people often think they know but don't), and unique questions that encapsulate multiple areas simultaneously. The layout of the material serves, in the begining as a learning tool...then much later is very convenient for drilling purposes. Last but not least...it's the only guide that updates constantly. The Q&A format makes retention of material very easy.

Achiever pretty helpful with gchem and bio...also for PAT...simulating test environment

Topscore....way too easy...desperate need of an update

Kaplan...a joke...the ochem section is ok in my opinion. Bio sucks...and gchem blows as well. I feel that gchem and ochem are two areas that are best learned by solving as many problems as you can digest. Destroyer and if you have time Organic Chemistry Odyssey is a good place to start. This book has not been updated for 50 years, yet every year they issue a "new edition." Talk about shaddy business practices. The subject tests are ok...bio is too easy..but gchem and ochem are decent if you want to test yourself.

Barrons AP Chemistry: good for review and extra source of problems

3000 solved problems in chemistry: good for extra quantitative problems

Organic Chemistry Odyssey: Absolute BAD ASS...the authority on Ochem for standardized tests.

If anyone needs any study material or any of the Kaplan material, please let me know. I'm willing to sell this material cheap.

I also found audio osmosis (12 cd's that cover sciences) useful for ipod and in the car.

Where was the Destroyer? I used Achiever/Kaplan blue book/Class book/Topscore pro/undergraduate books. Destroyer was the best thing by far for the sciences.

Keep in mind this poll was created in late 2005...I'm not sure if DAT Destroyer existed at that point.

DAT Achiever is a program that not only simulates the testing environment, but also a study tool that challenges your test taking skills to a greater level. Get it early in your prep schedule, so you'll benefit more from those problems and solutions.

EK is good study aids, but its material is meant more for the MCAT takers.

I think undergraduate textbooks play an important role for DAT prep too.

Campbell biology is especially good and comprehensive for the DAT.

Don't forget to frequently revisit ADA's TEST SPECIFICATIONS! This would really help reveal topics that you might have missed out.

It's a name of a DAT prep software, where you get to see the trial before deciding whether or not to pay for the licensed version. Have the DEMO tried out if you've not already done so.

Hey guys ! I have just finished my freshman year and am planning to start preparing for the DAT so I can start taking it at the end of my sophomore year "ya am planing to take it more than once because I suck at these kind of exams I just freez while doing them lol". I currently have finished college CHem 1 and chem 2 which is basically the G-chem section on the DAT and if everything goes according to schedule then by the end of my sophomre year I will hopefully be done with everything except Organic chem 2 so I was wondering what prep books do I have to purchase for the DAT ? I have read almost 60% of SDN DAT discussions and everyone have different idea so from you experiense what books shall I study .

** From my research I found that Most people recommend these books**

Bio : Schum , Cliff AP
    G-Chem : Destroyer , Kaplan
    O-Chem : Destroyer , Kaplan
    PAT : Crack PAT
Practice tests : Achiver , Top score " alot of people think top score needs an update"

Thank you very much for replying !!

Wait ... Some topics might be more important than the rest especially in the sciences and maths. You want to make sure that the time spent on each category is proportionate to its relevance and importance to the DAT.

Diligence + Frequent Practice + Confidence = Success on the DAT. You should be doing fine by the time you're ready to take the test with a long and early preparation.
