ANY other takers? Who got accepted during the last acceptance round in April?

I'll be in Burlington in early June looking for a place to live...very VERY excited for August    !

Just writing to say...Go Catamounts! Go UVM!! Go Buglady and the rest!

that is all

Hey buglady and UVM meds,

Sorry, I can't join you guys. I was torn and just withdrew from UVM MD/PhD for UVA to stay close to home and my fiancee.
I really loved Burlington and the people at UVM. I even booked a ski trip to a local resort just 20 mins out side of Burlington and had a blast.
Good luck and have a good time at UVM.

🙂

HEy what's up Buglady and Ktran!
I will also probably be attending UVM come Aug 11!!! Very excited to meet you guys. We should all list where we're from unless any of you guys feel too awkward about it.

Hey Ktran! What up buddy? I am definitely positive you were at my interview, remeber? WE met at the connection flight in Newark....I sent you a PM so check it.

I'm from Nor-Cal...and Joe Joe is ORIGINALLY from the Bay area...so, we'll have to hang out together and complain about not having access to Jamba Juice and fish tacos!

Any more Future Catamounts here!!! Where you at? Just trying to keep this thread alive.

So buglady,
what was your impression of Burlington Vermont, the school, students, faculty, and facilities? Anything you've heard that would be of inerest? I wasn't there for long but i got a good feel for the atmosphere and faculty, they seemed cool.

Dont know if there' any basketball fans, but Vermont made it to the tournament this year!!! First time in about 100yrs or so!

Ok, that' s it for now....Keeping this thread alive....Peace

whats a catamount, my google is broken 🙁. mmmmmmmm, fish tacos.......

A catamount is a type of mountain lion...thus the "cat" part of the word 😉

Pman, I absolutely loved Burlington and the surrounding area. I'm outdoorsy, so the area has alot to offer....the skiing/snowboarding options are endless...the town is awesome! The pedestrian mall on Church Street is very cute and has a lot of fun shopping and dining choices. The people in Burlington seem extrememly laid back and eco-friendly. The facilities are good, although the temporary library is kinda cramped. There's alot of construction going on, and I think one of the bigger medical buildings will be done by our 2nd or 3rd year. The faculty, in my opinion, were great...at least the ones I encountered! My interviewer was AWESOME. Cool guy.

ANyway, I could go on and on, but just go to www.uvm.edu and you'll find everything you need to answer your questions!

😎

Wow, Kut, your entusiasm is contagious 😉

Is it true that UVM gives out laptop to incoming students? What do u guys like best about the school? I have a hard time deciding.

from another post i made...

my impressions of the Closer Look:

1) very dedicated faculty who care about teaching and student learning (national teaching awards year after year for some of the faculty). they seemed very approachable and down-to-earth.

2) very happy and friendly students. in fact, the happiest and friendliest i've seen anywhere.

3) flexible curriculum in terms of taking a year off for research, be it at UVM, elsewhere in the nation, or abroad, or for personal reasons (children, etc.)

4) great use of technology in the new integrated curriculum (labtops for each student w/ lectures and additional readings for all the courses only a click away, software for virtual medicine, and a patient simulator). the anxiety of being a "guinea pig" in the new curriculum was not warranted since they are not at once re-vamping the entire curriculum, but have slowly implemented and tested out parts of it throughout the different classes (with good reception). anxiety has been replaced with excitement.

5) although they do provide a housing list, finding an apartment in this college town is very difficult. start to look asap.

6) diverse classmates; UVM is very non-traditional student friendly. actually, the non-traditional student at UVM is the "traditional" student.

7) tuition is outrageous! but the cost of living in Burlington is quite low (less than half of what i would typically spend in LA on housing, food, utilities, etc.).

8) great beer!

I just got my acceptance and I am going! I'm so excited.

Hey Shadeeazz,
What schools are you trying to choose from? Maybe some of us could give you insight about each school if we've interviewed there. I was debating between Loyola and UVM, but I felt the students were more happy at UVM, the atmosphere was relaxed, they emphasized a non-competitive environment (important for me), cool faculty, and a pretty place. I also personally like having an undergrad at my school...

I do have to say that the price was a deterent b/c vermont seemed to be of the more expensive schools for out-of-staters.

Yes, this year all the icoming students get a Dell Lattitude D600 Laptop. If you look it up, it's a pretty nice laptop....PC magazines Editor's choice in April 2003

Question for everyone, what is considered a relatively good match list? I know that ophthamology. othopedics, derm, radiology, etc. are good, but relative to other schools how does Vermont's match list compare?

CONGRATS Wdotzler! Welcome on board...

You're so funny!! I love your quotes. I knew what movies those quotes were from before I even finished reading them. Those are 2 of my all-time favorite movies. And you said the "down by the river" thing..and I know exactly where that is from too. We have a very very very similar sense of humor. I would love to chat with you. I couldn't figure out how to send you a private message. I guess I'm not "Student Doctor Network Literate!!"

My brother and his wife just graduated from NAU last year. I've been up there many times.

Talk to ya soon.

... so all of the incoming students get a laptop? do we pay separately for it, or is it part of tuition?

I'm trying to decide among Albany, UVM, and Drexel.
Here's my impression of each school:

Albany- The people seems very friendly, but I don't feel the town. It's like a ghost town....yeah it's 2 hrs away from NYC, but c'mon I'm not gonna start driving to the club at 7pm. The curriculum is ok...similar to most schools.

UVM- Students seem down to earth, non-competitive. I'm excited about the new curriculum, but worry about being the test subject. Again...Burlington seems boring. I'm not an outdoorsy person so I'd be screwed huh?

Drexel- Philly is so ghetto! I like the tech savvy campus and the large size of the class. More people to meet and less chance to interact w/ annoying ones. The plus factor is that I have a couple friends that go here, so they can show me the rope. Philly is a big city so there are definitely more things to do.

If anyone knows more info about any of these schools, feel free to PM me. Does anyone know the costs of living for these cities? Does anyone know the difference btw Level 1 Trauma vs Level 2 or whatever?

Thanks.

Does anybody have any advice on how to figure out housing? I am in California and I know I will need to go to Burlington in June or July to find somewhere to live, but has anybody already started looking? I think I want to live close to the school and with a roommate, but any advice would be helpful.

And buglady, I interviewed in March but I was at the MD/PhD interview. When did you interview?

I'm going out in early June to find a place...there's lots of helpful websites for housing...look on the burlingtonfreepress website...and also the local weekly paper, 7Days. I plan to email Eve Greene and get the list emailed a week before I go so I can call a few places to set up times to meet with them...that way, when I get there, I can immediately look a few places.

I have a few contacts in Burlington and the surrounding area....they recommend just driving around and checking out spots....some people don't even advertise in the paper...they just post a sign and hope people will find it....just be dilligent while looking!

I'm also gonna go out in June to look for a place...i have never moved out this far so this process is also a mystery to me. I think i'm just gonna wing-it.

Wow, it seems like a lot of California people are going to Vermont. I'm a Californian as well.

Hey, did everyone get that rescent letter sent out? What did it mean by "the laptops are yours to keep AFTER THE END OF THE THIRD YEAR".....what about before the 3rd year, do we return it each summer?!

Also, what did you guys think of the academic schedule sent out? We take our boards in Feb? Good or bad...i dunno...but screw it, we're going to med school baby.

I think they're saying we'll have paid the laptop after three years (built into our tuition)...I think we get to keep it the whole time...that would be pretty lame if we did have to return them every summer!

No letter yet, but I'm sure it'll come sooner or later....did they also mention in the letter what required shots you'll need?

bug-a-boo,

they want the results of BLOOD TESTS to see if you've been immunized, not just the dates you received the vaccinations!!! this applies for rubella, rubeolla, hepB, chicken pox. they also want a TB test from 6/1 onward only and a tetanus booster. what a pain!

Actually, i think our first year fully covers the laptop b/c tuition for out-of-staters is a whopping 39K, and then tution goes down again for the next 3 years. And yeah the letter includes all the shots you need, a schedule for the next four years, and a price range of apartments

Hey Joe Joe,
Do you know what happened to that website you used to find your apartment? I've been trying to get to the site and it's been down for the last couple of days....Do you know if it has a new web address now?

Does anybody else have any sites they know of for apartments in burlington? Buglady, have you found your place yet? I remeber u saying you were going out there in early June...I'll be leaving in about a week!

Thanks guys

As of June 1st, we can access the www.med.uvm.edu...in the accepted student letter they sent, they gave you the password so you can log onto COMET. Once you're logged in, go to the welcome section and they have a TON of links for apt. hunting....The Burlington Free Press, SevenDays weekly and that website that Joe Joe originally posted (i think the website moved) are all links...plus a bunch of great links for fun stuff like restaurants, outdoor activities, etc. ALso, email Eve Greene to ask for the updated housing list...it was just updated yesterday. There's a ton of great apts listed on it...I've already called on a few...

Good luck...I leave tomorrow! 😀

Thanks a lot Buglady! Wow good luck finding an apartment!!! ARe you printing directions to each of these places or just getting the phone #'s and calling them when you get there?....It's my first time moving so far away so i'm feeling a little overwhelmed and not so sure what procedures to take. When are u moving out there?

HOpe you find a great place Buglady, thanks for all your help...looks like you'll be my go to person in med school as well...haha j/k

ONce again thanks Bug

Pman,

I moved from California to Burlington last August. What do you plan on bringing? Do you have a load of stuff, or are you going to work out beds and such when you get here? Let me know an I can probably help you out.

And Eve's list is indispensable. She gets listings from various people in the Burlington area and they're only listed for med/grad students. I found both of my places there (I moved since I've been here).

Hey Pman,

Yes, I am currently a 1st year, though only for another nine days. It's been quite a year, though you guys will definitely have a different experience than we did.

Life in Burlington may be a shock to you, as it was to all the Californians in our class. The town is about 30K in Burlington, about 60K if you count in all the surrounding cities. Once you get past there, it's nothing but countryside and farms (there's one less than a mile up the road from me). With that, comes a different way of life, a little slower, and much quieter. Church Street is nice, but most often over-run by zealous undergrads on the weekend evenings. It's a very nice place to live, though the sub-zero temps take some getting used to.

The med school is great. There's profs here and there that you'd rather not have, but every curriculum has those. They're very interested in how you're doing, and Marga individually meets with all the first years in the first few months (dubbed The Marga Moment). Plus, there's social events like the Soiree in Oct, a talent show, the Osler Banquet that we had last month, all sorts of intramural activities, and just all sorts of other stuff going on. You should have a great time. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Woohoo, I found a place to live! And it rocks. I highly recommend looking at the apts on Eve's housing list...

I flew in on Sunday morning, saw my future apt. Sunday evening and gave my deposit on Monday....I can't believe how lucky I got...and how painless the process was!

Kut--I found a place on S. Union Street....aweseome, awesome 1 bdrm apt. that takes up the whole first floor of the house....excellent location, too!

Groovy, I used to live right around the corner from there. Should be pretty quiet. Congrats!

Oh yeah, I hope you got offstreet parking, and heat included!

I agree, we should defintely all meet up before orientation! I am moving into my apt on Colchester Ave on July 26th, and I can't wait!!!

Hey! My new apt is also on Colchester!! I won't be there til Aug 3rd though.

Hey all of you who are going to UVM,

Whats the deal with UVM wanting a list of cities and towns you've lived in with their populations, as well as making you list the speeding tix you've gotten?? how much does it hurt your chances if you've gotten 3 speeding tix? is it looked down upon at the school if you've lived in a big city? I've studied in big cities but was raised in a relatively small town...what do you guys think?

Don't list your speeding tickets--I didn't and it never hurt me! They are looking for things like violations of honesty and integrity.
As far as prior locations, list them all. As far as I could perceive, they are looking for diversity of background, ability to adapt to different kinds of environments, and (preferably) some experience with small town living.
Good Luck!
Feel free to email me: [email protected] if you have any other questions b/c I hate logging into SDN now that I'm finished with this process!

When did they ask about your speeding tickets?

on the secondary, they ask about your traffic violations or something to that extent (can't remember the wording).

That must have been started last year. What an odd thing to ask.
