I was curious what everyone's opinion on general surgery is. Way back when, a general surgeon probably did do a lot of different types of surgery. With so much specialization in medicine, there doesn't seem to be anyone who does a variety of work.

My only thoughts of the remaining general surgeons out there are pediatric surgeons and maybe plastic surgeons.

What do you all think?

Hi there,
Most of the general surgeons of the 21st century will be performing mostly laparoscopic procedures in the abdominal cavity. While your practice generally depends on where you are located, (remote = a wider variety of procedures; more urban= specialists), you can still expect to have a pretty good number of lap hernias, appy, choles, endocrine stuff, breast work and bowel resections. If you are a general surgeon in a academic center, you might have more endocrine or oncology type procedures. There is a great role for the general surgeon who is adept at doing minimally invasive work. The lap gastric bypasses can be done by general surgeons who have lots of experience with these cases.

The Gen. surgeons in my hometown (pop. about 50,000) still do a fairly wide variety of procedures. They do the standard stuff like choles, breasts, appys, and bowl surgery. But also some vascular like carotid endarts, fem-pops, abdominal aortic anuerisectomys, one gen surgeon even does a new type of AAA called an endovascular AAA...but he took a couple weeks of classes to be able to do them. A few of them will do something called a nisson fundoplication (lap nisson)...i think only two of them. One guy does some lung surgery...but he actually did a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery then decided to move to small town and just practice gen surgery.

They'll take up a gunshot wound or other trauma if there's no chance the patient will make it by chopper to the trauma hosp.
