Who are the most intelligent doctors in the hospital?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
1) clearly that will turn into a pissing match..
2) if it means who knows the most thats one thing but a whole different Q if it is who has the highest IQ.. IMO MICU guys just seem to know a lot. IMO NO surgeon unless he runs the SICU is all that "intelligent". Their skill lies in their ability to use their hands.

Agree with the comment about surgeons.... but CT surgeons and Trauma Surgeons both manage their own ICU patients if not their own ICU's all together. They not only know surgery, but they also know critical care, ECMO, Bypass... it's pretty impressive.

The rest of surgery are merely hand ******.

The ones smart enough NOT to be stuck working in the hospital or in a clinic. 😉

the last doctor to see the patient.. 😉

EM --> internist/surgeon --> subspecialists

I have always been the most impressed with Nephrologists in general. Not sure why, but those guys ALWAYS just seem like they know everything.

waterski i would agree on Trauma surgeons.. I have less experience with the CT guys cause when I did my ICU all the heart pts were cabg and honestly i only say the PA/NP manage the pt. I had a lot of experience with trauma and they do manage complex pts.

In terms of pure knowledge, I vote for the ICU guys. They have a great knowledge of pathology and physiology. They have to be really know their cardio, pulmonary, and renal physiology to manage these patients. Not to mention know how to deal with their underlying pathology, which in places without specialized ICUs (MICU, NeuroICU, TICU, SICU) can be almost anything. Impressive folks.

I will go with zorro.. it has to be someone who manages ICU type patients which is why ED docs should be in the conversation. Honestly, the surgical work in trauma surgery doesnt really impress me. Take out bullet, sew up bleeding vessel etc.. the management of bad car accident GSW to head etc DO indeed impress me.

I believe that the most intelligent person in the hospital is the one that realizes that there is more to life than medicine. That, at the end of the day, it is still a job. That no matter how much you may be able to diagnose, treat, cut, or cure, we will all still die at some point and we need to enjoy the things which matter most such as family, friends, and relationships.

I would agree with Roja, the person who is not chained to the hospital or clinic is the smartest.

While I agree with the sentiment I hate when people say that medicine is just a job. It's not it's more. That's why it's more important that when you are not doing it you take care of yourself. Part of taking care of yourself is definately doing other things and haveing other interests but..... medicine is not just a job. I have had just jobs my whole life. Now I know I have more, call it your life's work, a calling, a curse, or a gift, whatever, depending on how you look at it but make sure you look at it as more then a job.
That being said the smartest people in medicine are the dermatologist who managed to make a job a very very high paying job at that 😀

How about the CEO of the hospital who collects all the money, has a nearly 7 figure salary and is constantly preaching the sky is falling and trying to cut expenditures? He is a smart guy.

Hummm- a doctor that knows there is more to life than the hospital and can handle critical care, having a firm grasp of the physiology of multiple organ systems..... where might someone find such a physician?

good point. And the fact that they spend 90% of their day doing crosswords puts them as strong canidates for highest fund of overall generally useless knowledge. Anesthesiologists really are pretty sharp with their phys, but probably run a little short on diagnostic capability and knowledge of pathology (you know, the stuff that makes you doctor instead of a physiologist). In all seriousness, when it comes to physiology, the gas guys are some of the best. And yes, they realize there is more to life than the hospital, so they get some bonus points for that.

My vote goes to Trauma surgeons or Critical care docs. Maybe its the experience I have with some of the trauma surgeons I know, but overall they seem the most confident about the knowledge they have, and on the branch campus I go too, they do take care of a good amount of the sicu, nicu patients, not so much the micu.

EP docs are pretty friggin' smart...

Oh. uh. I actually meant Electro-Phys, but probably was subconsciously thinking EM.
