Office personnel, admin assistants, non-medical office workers
When dealing with admissions offices, residency departmental offices, and any other people within the setting of the program you may apply to remember these simple rules:
Your interview already started when you contact them or they contact you, everything you may or may not say counts at this point.
These people run the show in many instances and have more to do with your success or failure than you might realize. Imagine showing up for a residency interview after battling traffic, catching a flat, and not having your coffee. If you were pleasant and considerate when talking with the program manager you might find the nicest people in the program lined up to meet with you and your day goes just great, but if you were short, or rude, or a jerk you might find some hateful curmudgeon that it took weeks to convince he had to interview someone whether he wanted to or not see where Im going.
Med school interviews or residency interviews, they all start when you decide youre applying. So, get on top of your game and stun everyone with how nice and professional you really are all the time, even when you dont expect people to be watching and taking notes that the ad-com might read one day.
