hi guys

so i've realized one thing in this whole process - it's all about who you know
so what i was wondering is if any of you have come across someone in an admissions office at a med. school or know some one who is very helpful, influential, or who'll fight for you etc.

I'm sure connections may help in some instances, but med admissions is largely merit based. If you only have a 25 mcat and sub 3.0 gpa, youre gonna have trouble regardless. I would disagree that its all about who you know. I'm sure most people that get into the top schools are there because they deserved it, not because of connections that they have.

Agreed....and i probably could have phrased it better, but i just meant that when you're competing with such a large pool of people, it can no doubt help

It also is probably more important to have connections each successive step. So residency spots will be more influenced by connections than med school spots. Likewise, job in a powerful private group practice is probably all connections and very little merit. The key is to get your foot in the door into medicine (i.e. having at least minimum credentials to get in), then you can make what you want out of it afterwords with who you know.
