Who got into the Texas schools and which ones?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an acceptance letter from Baylor yesterday.😎

Congrats, Dentist2b! 🙂

I'm a Tx resident and so obviously I'm going to be applying to all the Tx schools. Could you please tell me more about Baylor? What was the interview like? What kind of GPA and DAT do they like? Etc... Thanks!! 🙂

Hey dentist2b,
maybe we'll be classmates next year! 😎
got into Baylor and San Antonio as of today.

~Qoo

Congrats Qoo and dentist2B, that's really awesome.

For all those other Texas lurkers, UTH and Baylor are still reviewing apps and interviews, so there's hope yet! I haven't been able to reach UTSA, but I assume that they still going...

Again, congrats to you guys.

I also received a letter from UT Houston yesterday!!! It was my first choice!!!

Hey congrats to dentist2b on UTH!

What were the interviews like there, what sort of questions?

Also, if you wouldn't mind posting you DAT scores so the rest of us can get an idea of a successful future TX dentist is like. That would help a couple of us TX ppl who are still anxiously waiting for interviews from the TX schools.

Thanks a lot and congrats again!!

hey dentist2b,

congrats on UTH acceptance!
why is it your first choice? what do you like about it? why not baylor? just wondering coz i'm trying to make my decision too.

~qoo

I got into Baylor, UT San Antonio and UT Houston! Now I'm debating over which to choose, as well. I'm from Dallas, so Baylor's a huge name over there... but I was more impressed with San Antonio.

The computer thing at SA scares me -- I'm not sure that I'd like to come out of dental school with a library trapped inside a laptop, or on a DVD. I love the idea of having your own space (be it the lab cubicles for D1 and D2, or your personal office area once you're a D4), and their sim lab is coming along, too. Academically it's better, but I hear Baylor's labwork (you do your own for all 4 years) pays off in the long run. Also, the SA interview process seemed much more organized and polished than that of Baylor.

Baylor is close to home for me. I'm not certain of the housing situation in and around the university, however. Students at Baylor vs. San Antonio seemed very different, but I felt like I had less of an opportunity to interact with the Baylor ones. Age ranges were much larger, too, I noticed. But their sim lab, oh my... very pretty. I would guess that the other two schools are rushing to catch up with Baylor on that one, though.

Houston is definitely oh so chill... and after living in the Big Easy, chill's cool, but I found it overly so. I also didn't like that the students and administrators were cutting down on UTHSCA and Baylor. The other two schools didn't say anything negative about their in-state competitors. The class size in Houston was definitely its main highlight; a class of 60 versus 90 is a considerable difference. (I heard Houston planned to accept 40 for a class of 60, and the other two would accept 120 for classes of 90. Did anyone else hear that? I found it strange that Houston was more selective, but less academically sound).

I think all three schools did equally well on their board exams, so that's not really a factor. I feel like I need to visit all three schools again, the interviews were so long ago (early September), but doubt that'll be possible. Anyone's feedback would be much appreciated! At this point, I'm torn between San Antonio and Baylor. For the sake of ease, Baylor's best; for my overall impression, San Antonio has a slight advantage. :/ But, hey, I can't really complain. I'm going to be a dentist!!!!!!

I remember hearing, at one of the interviews, mention of scholarships (albeit, very few) being offered to students upon admission. Does anyone know when that happens, if at all, and with which schools? I plan to call the schools next week to find out further info.  😕

I got the merit based scholarship from Baylor for $3,300 in the first year only. My friend and I got the same offer but don't know if they offer more to other students.

sweetpree,
did u apply to other schools outside of texas? Im trying to decide over Baylor and Penn.

For other texans on the forum, would you rather go out of states or stay in texas for dental school?

THANKS!

~Qoo

Qoo,
I applied to various schools out of state, but deferred my interviews 'til after the break because I want to stay in Texas. I think the tuition advantage -- for a fantastic education, no matter which of the 3 schools you choose -- definitely beats out Penn, among other schools. Graduating with (worst case scenario) $120,000 in debt, vs. $300,000, speaks volumes for the freedom you have in terms of when, where and how you start a practice, along with the rest of your life.
In terms of reputation, the Texas schools are no Ivies, but I hold little doubt that a Texan dentist could hold his or her own in a match against a Penn dentist 😉.

I wonder who'll be driving the fancier car 5 years after they
graduate, though....

Anyone have thoughts on that matter, or on which of the 3 TX schools to choose from?

Alas, no $3,300 scholarship from Baylor for me. Guess I'm just not cool enough. So it goes.

I didn't apply to any out of state schools, mostly for the same financial reasons that SweetPree mentioned. I came out of my undergrad with about 80k in debt, and after a few years out in the working world I've been able to slice it to 30k. But it was very very painful - pb&j and mac & cheese & tuna - awww yeah... I'm very hesitant to get back into more debt than I have to take on, so keep my perspective in mind.

The TX schools are a fantastic bargain for the education that you receive. Esp. if you plan to practice in Texas - hardly any of your patients will even know the names of the top tier schools (apart from the Harvard name). Client base is mostly through good word of mouth (you have to be a good dentists first and foremost to do well privately) and good location. The one exception would be if you plan on doing academic, research, or specializing. You might be better served attending a more prestigious sounding school to help you get into the top specialty school. But after you get out, you still need to be a good dentist with a good location.

As far as UTSA goes, even with the computer curriculum, I hear that most of the students end up wasting a bunch of money printing their text out anyways. 'course I heard this from a UTH person - heh... The nice thing about UTSA is that their clinics are nice. You have people dedicated to scheduling your appts. for you.

I forget whether UTH or Baylor is the school where you have to do your own scheduling for clinics. It seems that it would be a bit crazy having to do that everytime you went to clinic. Can anyone out there confirm this for me?

Thanks for everyone's input - it has definitely helped a lot!

Since I'm not originally from Texas I don't have that "tie" to the place so I will apply to out of state schools as well as the Tx ones. True, tuition issue is a big factor and Tx schools have awesome rates! 🙂 Here is my opinion of the 3 schools:

Baylor - I've heard it's prestigous compared to a state school - maybe that's just becuased it's private. Who knows. I hear that it's also good for clinical vs. research. I think I would rather go to a school that emphasizes clinical actually.

UTHSCSA - Good school in that it's highly rated as one of the better dental schools in the states...or so I'm told. Don't know if they still have their ranking though....and who cares about ranking anyway? I live in San Antonio and frankly, I'm ready to leave. If I get into UTHSCSA instead of other schools then of course I'd stay. 🙂

UT Houston - Have heard it's rather mediocre - sorta like UT - San Antonio. haha! I asked for info in the mail and I got a blunt email back saying to refer to the website...lazy bastards...

That's all I really know about the schools so far.

myameena

Houston's popular among my fellow pre-dent mainly b/c of its location. Relatively speaking, the city Houston is more exciting than San Antonio and Dallas. But since I live in Houston, I am ready to leave. 😛

Baylor's interview is 3 one-on-one, each lasting about 20 minutes (someone would come knocking at the door notifying the interviewer that time's up, hehe). You will interview with Dr. Long, the director of admission and two other members on the ad com depends on the day you are interviewing.
Any other questions? 🙂

~Qoo

Hello all,

I will interview with Baylor and SA soon. I am kind of nervous about this. If you guys have any advise/suggestion, please let me know.
Thanks,

PhiKhanh

PhiKhanh,

Don't be nervous! You'll do fine! The interviews I had at SA and Baylor were really laid back. Just be prepared to answer traditional questions like why dentistry, strengths/weaknesses, etc etc. Bring lots of questions to ask at the interview!!
If you have any questions, feel free to post! I'll try my best to answer!

~Qoo

hey PhiKhanh - congrats on your interviews!

since there are still a couple of us out there who are waiting for interviews, would you mind posting when you submitted your tmdsas? also, about how long it took before they got back to you and your interview date if you don't mind.

feel free to pm me w/ the info as well - good luck with your interviews!

Djsux,

I sumitted my application alittle late. The center told me that they sent my application to schools on 28-29 of Oct which is 2 or 3 days before the dealth line. After that I received the interview letters from schools in about 10-15 days.

Good luck,

PhiKhanh

Mazalendo,

do you mind to let us know what kind of questions you were asked.

PhiKhanh

mzalendo,

no, i havent made my final decision yet. but out of the three tx schools, i favor baylor the most!!! it's such an awesome school. yea, keep me updated about ur app process!!!

~Qoo

mzalendo - Many thanks for the update on UTSA - I would say that I'll religiously check my mail and email, but I'm doing that already waiting to hear anything.

Oh I did talk to UTH today, and they mentioned that they will be having another adcom mtg on Wed. (12/18) which will continue on to Thursday if they don't get through everyone. This will probably be their last one (my words, not theirs) as UTH mentioned that they only have one interview date open in Jan.

So cross your fingers and hope that they review my file before yours - that way you won't make me look bad! Good luck everyone - it seems like Texas is winding down, but you never know what could happen between now and Fall 2003...

"The greatest test of courage on the earth is to bear defeat without losing heart." - R. G. Ingersoll

Good luck to those who are still waiting to hear from schools. Classes don't fill up until May I believe. I do believe that they interview people until feb or even march, coz some dental students (at all 3 schools) told me they interviewed late and still got in. So keep your hopes up!

Mzalendo,
I'd just call them and say "hey, i got an interview from Har-vud, would you interview me now?" 😀

~Qoo

I am going to be applying in the summer of 03 for texas schools.
Seems to me like everyone is looking at San Antonio. Can anyone tell me what they thought of UTH and San Antonio. plus or minus.

thanks again

Back from the depths of sdn past...

What up - got back from a UTSA interview, and I heard from a group of recent interviewees that there are still about 1/4 of the seats available for UTSA's upcoming class. There were probably about 20 ppl there at this interview session, and I assume the same number will be attending the next one as well. There is only one "scheduled" interview date remaining (on the 27th - I think) for their cycle.

So if you're still waiting on them, give them a call and see if you can somehow talk your way into this last spot. But remember, if all else fails, there's still a lot of time before class starts up in July - don't lose hope.

Anybody got some tips for the UT-Houston interview they would care to share?

UTSA - the surprising thing was that Dr. Thomas mentioned that GPA and DATs were taken off the app so that the interviewers would "get the know you as a person." It was pretty chill - mostly about hobbies and why dentistry. I'm a career changer who took the MCAT before, so I got asked about those. It's mostly about your app, so review that before you go in. I only had one interviewer - in the fall interviews, I hear they had two (one student, one faculty).

cheers to all my peeps left in the game - best of luck to you all...

how 'bout an opinion from a 1st year? i am at uthscsa, and i would never dream about going to a different school! There are a lot of misrepresented issues about our curriculum. Yes, you are required to purchase a laptop, and it does seem like a lot of money to throw down for the dvd, but you probably get an average of 3-5 reference books for each subject all on a cd. For me this was a plus because i can type in what i want to look for, and search 100+ books without ever turning a page. We get hard copy manuals for each class, and i dont know anyone in my class that printed a whole book. Everything we need is really in the manuals, and the staff here is always so willing to help. We have a lot of opportunities to integrate clinical things into our 1st year...i will see my first patient ever at the end of this semster!
if yall have any questions, just ask😀
congrats to those of yall who got in
get ready!!!!

hey djsux,

who did u interview with? did u ask when are u gonna find out the verdict? good luck!!! don't forget to post when u hear anything!

~Qoo

what up, qoo.

Thanks for the words of encouragement - I can't remember if I read where you had decided to make deposits with. For the TX schools, I think today is the deadline, eh? Good luck with that tough decision - at least you know you'll be heading off to d-school somewhere great!

I interviewed with Dr. MacDougall, the bigwig of research over there. It was pretty chill, but I did get asked to explain some of the weaker portions of my application...

Dr. Thomas mentioned that once the interview are finished that they will get the subjective scores tallied, add it to our objective score (sci. gpa, aca DAT, overall gpa), and if our total is at the same level as the first round of acceptances, then a letter will go out. Otherwise, you get ranked according to your score and have to sit around on the waitlist until ppl start declining. I hear that they may meet early next week to crunch numbers and make decisions.

We'll see what happens... Can anyone confirm if Baylor has anymore interview invites?

cheers and gltya

djsux,

i have sent in my deposit to Baylor. Baylor has become my top choice after the interview. i saw many things i like and a personality fit.
a friend of mine is interviewing at baylor next week and they interview 3 days a week. have u called the school? talk to janet pledger and she might be able to help.

~Qoo

did you here anything yet man

just wanted to know

thanks again

nothing new on this end - I did find out that Baylor is pretty much finished on the scheduling interviews. Unless you receive a letter this week, then just sit tight and hope that someone cancels. It was mentioned that if I had applied earlier, that I probably would have gotten an interview - so for any TX newbies, APPLY EARLY even if you have piss poor scores like meself. Other than that - just doing the waiting game with UTSA and prepping for UTH.

What about you hockeydentist - are you still waiting to hear back for interviews? for acceptances? or are you in the lucky bunch that have got a nice big fat check deposited at one of the choice TX schools?

cheers...

Hey djsux

i haven't applied yet, I will be appyling in April-may, i am talking real early most likely may.
University of Houston

not taken the dat yet, but soon

hopefully if you hear something soon man, I heard you got an interview with UTH. I know Dr. Johnson, from our DDS meetings as well as the dean. Its very laid back, not too many hard questions. And when you take your tour of the facility, the interview is not over. the student that takes you around, wants to hear questions, so speak up if you have a chance. the tour guide slash dental student reports back to the the admissions council and tells them if there were any eager and talkitive students. That was straight out of Dr. Johnson mouth, the recuriter for UTH.

what up texas peeps,

Returned from my UTH interview last week, and as told that the three texas schools have filled up about 2/3 of the class so far. Dr. Pierpont mentioned that ours was the last interview date (1/27) and that UTSA was probably finishing up their interviews that day as well. Not too sure about Baylor as they didn't give me an interview...

So has anyone heard from any of the tx schools lately? Supposedly if you were a top tier applicant that they wanted, they should let you know pretty soon. Keep me posted as the info flows through.

As far as the UTH interview, it was chill. One interviewer, regular conversation, but I hear that some other ppl had lists of questions.

cheers to all my fellow txns still in the struggle/waiting - best of luck you. if you get in, put in a good word for me...

Houston was really a chill I had I gentleman by the name Dr. Rittman (with an english accent) I wasn't asked a single question. I promise. I asked all the questions for one and a half hours. I was so exhausted after all this I could hardly speak .
I also have a conspiracy theory that the dental schools in texas are waiting until the end of the interview cycle before the begin accepting the second batch of students . Why have they done this? I have word that the acceptance procedure may change next year. My point, they may have noted a discrepancy in the acceptance procedure.
Qoo lets talk about baylor when you have the chance.

Congrats Mzalendo for getting into Har-vud!!! 😀 Good job!!! Truly happy for you.
If I were deciding between Baylor and Harvard, I'd go for Harvard. Simple because this is such a prestigous school that not everyone would even have the chance to go to. Hehe.. but I didn't get in, so.. 🙂
About Baylor, I'd say it's got everything to train you to be a good dentist too. It's true that their research is not as strong as the big H, and the number of students they put into residency programs every year is not nearly as high, but hey, if you want to be a general dentist and save on the tuition bill, this is a great place to go to.
What did you think about the people at Harvard versus Baylor? Where do you think you'd fit in better? You just came back from Harvard so everything is still fresh in mind. I would suggest you to go visit Baylor if you have the chance just to refresh your memory. 🙂
I'll talk to u next time. bye
again, congrats!!!!

~Qoo

definitely big ups and mad props to mzalendo for getting in to the big maroon H - that's really awesome. You definitely deserve it - now comes the tough part, eh?!

congrats again and I agree with your UT conspiracy idea...

hey tex school mailed out their 2nd round of acceptances around Feb 6th. I received acceptances from all three schools which confirmed the conspiracy theory that all three schools were waiting for the end of the years interviewing cycle before mailing out acceptances.
Good luck friends.

Yes, I finally got accepted to Baylor. The letter was sent out on 2/5. I will be attending.

sent out non intent to enroll letters to san antonio and houston . I hope this opens up the field to my friens in Texas. My decision is narrowed down to Baylor and Harvard.

what up tx peeps - I'm glad to post that I was lucky/fortunate enough to receive an acceptance from UTSA this past week! My acceptance was sent out on 2/11, so I must have been an on the bubble candidate. Hey - whichever way I can get in is cool with me. I'll be sending in my intent to enroll letter back today.

I'm still waiting to hear back from UTH, but I'm so very thankful that I was able to get in to UTSA. Mad thanks for all the support from the ppl on this board, esp. in this thread.

mz, good luck with your decision - sorry to hear that we won't be classmates in d-school.

For all those still waiting to hear back, best of luck to you all. I'm sure that the spots will continue be available.

djsux, joining the ranks of d-class 2007 - hook it up!!

we all have moments were our paths seem uncertain but dj I have always have the feeling that your destiny will be in the context of a dental school. Remember ..........Congrats dj and everyone joining dental school this year.

Congrats to all who have been accepted! To the baylor futures, I'm here waiting on you! I'm a D1 at Baylor.

Harvard v. Baylor----research v. private practice

Baylor has a reputation as one of the top clinical schools in the U.S. Harvard & San Antonio both are tops in research.

See you baylor folk soon.

decidous and anyone out there if you don't mind I could certainly use your opinions. What would you do in the same situation and what has been your experience ( decidous--both positive and negative at Baylor) as for choosing harvard will simply mean one thing I will have to aggressively pursue a specialty. The biggest issue I had when choosing schools was comfort. Harvard and Baylor certainly felt comfortable. With a harvard scholarship harvard is 45 000 more expensive than Baylor Harvard is pass/fail, no ranking I think until your final year. What would you guys do ?? Thanks in advance

Congrats to djsux, mzalendo and pongebob!!!!
Join the DS1 family!

~Qoo

djsux,

Congrats on your acceptance. I have been checking to see when you were going to get in. You have been giving good advice to other applicants on here and now its your turn to enjoy the excitement.

Hey,

I'm sorry, but I really can't answer that for you. I did not have that choice to make. I did have to choose between San Antonio & Baylor (no offense to anyone, but Houston was not where I wanted to go). I have to say that I acted like it was a hard decision, but when it came down to it I really knew where I wanted to go. Baylor is what I'm looking for in a school--they have a great clinical training program and from what I've experienced so far the faculty is excellent too. I don't really care for their grading scale (93 is the base of an A, 85-B, 75-C and so on) but that's not a lot (it's amazing how those come into play in a professional school!).

Anyway, I wasn't looking for the research geared program.

You, however, have to answer your own question. And you, like myself, may already know the answer.

Texas SDNers,

Many of you seem to be not-very-impressed with UT Houston. For those of you who chose other schools over it, I was wondering, what exactly did you not like about it? Was it the city, the scholastic atmosphere, the teaching/learning style, etc?

Okay, I'm going to get in trouble here, but I'll answer the Houston question from my own personal view.

I didn't really want to live in Houston. But, I also didn't want to go there because it is the only school in Texas without an outstanding reputation. Both Baylor & San Antonio are regarded as superb schools able to hold there own in virtually all national comparisons.

There was a dean who introduced a "work at your own pace" program in Houston. On top of that, he supposedly really wrecked the whole program there. These are things I had heard not only from dentists, but from dentists who graduated from Houston.

That dean is no longer there. I feel quite certain that Houston is cleaning up and probably a very formidable school even now.

But that's why I didn't want to go there.

Please don't lash out at me for telling y'all the truth. I mean no ill-will and I really do feel you can get a good education at any of the three TX schools.

dentist2B,

Btwn UTSA and UTH, I really enjoyed my day at UTH more. There was more student interaction, a friendly dean (Pierpont), and cool director of admissions (Johnson). I was impressed that students at UTH were friendlier than UTSA; my tour was given by Johnson and he pretty much knew every d-student and pulled them over to talk with the group. As some other ppl have mentioned, some of the UTH'ers did rag on the other d-schools in tx.

UTH doesn't have schedulers (that's a big one so I hear). The labs are in the basement and you don't have your own cube like at UTSA. As far as the curriculum goes, they did have the modules/self paced learning about 10 years ago, but they did away with that and are now traditional lectures w/ some problem based learning small groups (for some classes). I have also heard from a recent grad that patient pool was an issue, but the dsIII/dsIV's that I talked to didn't really have an issue with that. Not a biggie, but the lecture rooms at UTSA were much better.

My general feeling is that UTH is a good d-school; however it's not as highly regarded as the others, so it will be more difficult to get into a specialty. I agree with deciduous that you'll get a good education at any school, and most ppl who come to the dentist could care less which dental school you graduated from - so long as you don't inflict too much pain on them.

Of my three tex interviews the Houston experience seemed to be far much hospitable. UTH seems to be ailing for some administration shortcomings. I believe that UTH is probably the most selective of the three dental schools in texas aside from the fact that they have the smallest class (65). In my interview I sensed the feeling of administrational conflicts some professors thought that certain things being implemented are utterly stupid. This is however one person's view. When you have a bunch of profs. on a table you are going to have a conflict of interests.
Being a houston resident I would have prefered to stay in houston had I a better feel for the program. Houston may be a program on the rebound but I not willing to gamble on such optimism. Nevertheless regardless of which program you attend, be it Harvard, with an abbreviated clinical experience, the opportunities are out there (the logwood medical district in MA and the huge medical center in HOU). A self propelling, ambitious student will simply grab them. You are very much in control of the quality of education you receive, it is harder to convince others against the prejudice of the quality of education you have received.

Qoo,
Great job it is a great school I checked their website and it seems to have a great research footing. I am not sure whether they administer Problem based learning you probably should look into that. I can only sum up my advice as "we all know where we want to be, we get a little bit distracted, a little bit unsure but we all know the schools that serve our best interests". Will you be able to live with the choice you made.? This over that.

wise words from my man, mzalendo.

if anyone's interested, I recv'd my reject letter from Baylor (no interview there so I was expecting that). As far as UTH is concerned, for those that heard from them for their 2nd round acceptance, did anyone hear as far as waitlist/rejects and when it was sent out? I'm checking my mail, but haven't recv'd anything from them as yet. maybe dentist2b can put in a good word for me there!

mz - gl with your decision and keep us posted on how it goes.
