Hi everyone,

just wondering if any of you got into those 8 years medical school programs straight out from high school. my cousin got rejected to all of them. how competitive are those programs really??
what are you profiles?

I got into the Brown 8 year med program but declined it since i didn't know whether i wanted to really go to med school or not. I, in fact, am going to med school but am glad i didn't pigeon-hole myself into it going out of high school....

i got into 5 of those ba/md programs both 7 and 8 year ones....THey are pretty competitive generally like 500 apply and out of those 500 around 20 selected. However this is variable and changes from program to program. SAT range is usually above 1400 to be considered however this again can change depending on which program you apply to and your other credentials. Service and volunteer experience in the medical field is expected as well. You generally have to fill out a regular undergrad app and then various supplements for the med school portion. You also must undergo the interview process if you are called in for an interview at the med schools. Some programs require interviews at the undergrad level and then may forward you to the med school. ITs a long process but its definitely worth it if you are sure you wish to pursue a career in medicine. I myself plan on attending GW's 7 year program and will most likely major in psych and religion during my undergrad. I dont have to take the MCAT and am required to keep a 3.3 GPA, B in all classes and 100 hours community service every year. Proviidng i fulfill these requirements I will be attending med school my fourth year. If you have questions on specifics feel free to PM me.

I also was accepted to the Brown program and turned it down. From what I have gathered the competitivness of this program is highly dependent on your demographics (i.e. state residency (RI being greatly favored) and your ethnicity). I know a few kids from Rhode Island whose resumes were very good but not spectacular (sats maybe 1350-1400) who got into PLME. I know of one URM whose resume was unspectacular who got in (sats maybe 1200). I know of one out of state indian male with an extremely spectacular resume who was turned down (sats 1600).

I would say that these programs are competitive at the level of the average ivy school (excluding HYP).

As for me, I chose to attend a top ivy over Brown PLME. I couldn't be happier with my decision. It gave me a few more years to explore different fields so that I could be sure I was entering the field of medicine for the right reasons. I also am very glad to not be spending 8 years in Providence with the same small group of kids in the PLME program. I think these programs are a little odd. I had absolutely no experience in medicine whatsoever and I was accepted. Basically I just claimed I wanted to be a doctor and they said okay.

Finally, if you are really concerned with prestige (not that i'm arguing you should be), I will be attending a significantly higher ranked medical school next year.

i agree with the fact that Brown is alil odd in accepting and rejecting people into their PLME program.....I think if you look at others programs there's more of a search for a candidate that is passionate and devoted to service as well as academics and genuinely understands the path towards medicine....Brown....welll i applied there and i was rejected.....however i wouldnt have chosen to go there....for a few reasons....first_ the application itself.....brown never asked why i wished to pursue a career in medicine, a question i feel is essential. Also unlike ANY other med programs in the country, brown does not ask for an interview with the medical school, something i find quite disturbing. I feel the interview is a critical part of the admissions process and im sure traditional applicants will agree with me on this. Anyhow...those are just somethings to think about...

congrats on making your decision! i know that you were stressing about it... am happy that you chose GW (that's completely what i would've done!). it seemed like the best choice between the multiple places you were considering!

good luck! 😀

thankkks tru!!! thanks for the advice, helppp and support...i appreciate it 🙂
