Soon to be MS2, interested in gen surg (possibly plastics) and have diddly squat in my school's city for clinical research so trying to look elsewhere. Who is the best person to email for cold contacting for clinical research opportunities? Do I email the residency director or directly reach out to residents? Or just email professors in X department? Bit lost because I don't have much research experience. . .

Aim for coordinators first. If that doesn't pan out, then attendings, then residents.

Coordinators typically know which attendings are doing research and need help, or they at least know the person who knows this information. You want to work on projects directly with attendings over residents bc you want to ask for LORs eventually, plus they can end up going to bat for you at their program. But if you can't get an attending, a resident is better than nothing, because you can at least get a project out of it (potentially) and they know attendings, so they can maybe recommend you for another project with one.
