just finished interviewing. now i am debating on whether to send a thank you letter or not. if did, who would i send it to? to the admissions office/committee? to my interviewer?

I've been sending letters to the interviewers if they gave me a card. Otherwise, I send it to the admissions committee to forward on to the interviewer.

I sent one to each of my interviewers and one to the admissions director that I spoke with after my interview was over.

I did thank you letters for about half of my interviews. Looking back in hindsight, it was a waste of time and paper.

I don't think a thank you letter does any good. It may just be annoying to the committee. I've had schools say pretty much just that . . . don't send thank you letters, you're wasting your time.

Just my 2 cents.

On one of my interview days, the admissions committee rep specifically told us to send letters through the admissions office first. They get copied before they're sent on to the interviewer, and the copies are added to the applicant's file for review.

I'm sure different schools treat letters differently. In my opinion, I don't understand how taking a few minutes to do something that will either be valued or ignored can hurt one's chances. There's no way a quick thank-you will harm your prospects at any school.

Wow, Blee, if you don't mind sharing - which school was that? I would feel so weird knowing that my thank-yous were being read by the committee! For those that I didn't know addresses, I did send to interviewer c/o admissions office, but I hope they just passed it on via campus mail.... weird. Maybe I'm the only one squicked out by letters being read by anyone other than the intended recipient....

It was multiple schools, actually, but the most specific advice came from Georgetown. It was stressed that thank-yous were not mandatory at all, just that they would most likely be shared by whomever is selected to review the applicant file.

Taking a step back, though, you should absolutely write your notes with the expectation that they may be read by someone other than the designated recipient. These aren't personal letters, after all. I see it as an excellent opportunity to give schools a little more insight about me, and I try to recall specific topics we discussed or little quirks that pop up from time to time. The hope is to form a bit more of a personal connection to the school, and while it doesn't always work, it can never hurt.

That's definitely the right attitude to take, but I still find it odd! Anyhow thanks for the reply.

I would ask the director what their policy is. The question has been brought up on most of my interviews by someone and they have given direct answers on what they would like to happen. One school said that they didnt want any thank you notes sent, the other said send them to the committee and they will forward them on.
