did you use your advising office to have them interview you and send out your recommendations etc. or did you do it on your own?

There is one at my school but I was late in starting the process and paperwork so I chose to do it on my own. I talked to one of my professors, who works on the health professions committee at my school, and he said that people who use the committee have a better chance of getting accepted since the committee does a good job of bringing up the good points of the applicant to dental schools.

i didn't have an interview, i knew the pre-dent committee well and just gave them the rest of my application and they sent out a recommendation letter, i had 3 other evaluators which I asked to write a LOR and then of course they sent out the letter themselves.

It was mandatory at my school. I had to get 6 letters of recommendations and go on 2 interviews a year before I applied to d-school. They really helped prepare me for the kinds of questions that interviewers at the d-schools would ask.

If you have one at your school, go through it. I heard from my pre-health committee that dental and medical schools think it's pretty shady if you apply without a committee's approval and your school has one. Of course, if you're school doesn't have one, you really can't apply with them. 😛

I did it myself, even though we had a Health Professions Office.

i wonder if going through them results in significantly more successful applicants than of those who did it themselves... that would be an interesting survey...

Pre Health Comms are good, but at my school at least, it is kind of a bottle neck. You want to make sure that if you do a Committee letter you get on point right away to avoid any delay in processing your app. Also, make sure you get some killer LORs because Ive actually heard of Pre Health Comms writing people bunk letters that actually make you look bad. Why your own school would send a letter to screw you in the butthole I don't know, its kind of eff'd up.

applied a couple years after graduation.. so i did it on my own..

I need a pre health committee letter to get in to buffalo from my undergrad college. It isnt a big deal because I will just talk to my professor who is charge of my **** (aka my advisor) and he'll hook me up.

But in all seriousness, it is a good idea to look into what the pre health comm at your college does and what previous applicants have done. In some schools its probably worthless, especially when you have a class size of 10,000 or something ridiculous like that.
