Hypothetical situation, just wanted to see what everyone's responses would be. Say you're told you'll be hospitalized with an (unknown) medical condition. It may be very serious, it may be difficult to diagnose, or it may be some combination (you have no way of knowing what this medical condition will be).

All you can control is what internal medicine sub-specialty runs your care (hospitalist is an option). Who do you go with? Nephro for their extensive knowledge base? Pulm/CC for their ability to handle a critical situation? Rheum for its ability to diagnose more obscure diseases? Hospitalist for it's general knowledge? Or any other sub-specialties...

An Internist Duhhh!!!!

ha ha.. what kind of question is this?

I would pick an Internist who would then make appropriate consults.

Interesting question..I guess you are indirectly asking who are the smartest specialists?

My choice would be a nephrologist.

What ever Dr. House is boarded in.

obviously general IM

A cardiologist, who would then tell me that all my problems are due to poor forward flow. Never mind that my EF > 55%.

a good internist/hospitalist that knows how to correlate labwork with clinical presentation and physical exam findings in order to obtain the best consultants on the case if needed.
