Founding Dean / Chief Academic Officer – Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine
    Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine

Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine (“MCOM”) invites applications for the position of Founding Dean / Chief Academic Officer (“CAO”)

The CAO will direct the establish of a medical school in Montana. This includes, but, is not limited to:

    • Driving the process leading to the eventual accreditation of the school
    • Building a team of faculty and staff
    • Overseeing the development of the curriculum
    • Being the school’s ambassador in the region
    • Building relationships with key stakeholders, including, hospital, physician community and others
    • Overseeing the construction of the medical school campus
    • Providing overall academic and administrative leadership for MCOM
The school is sponsored by Manipal, which is one of the largest educators of doctors globally. It is expected that Manipal will partner with one of more colleges / universities in the establishment of MCOM

The CAO must meet COCA’s competency requirements, which includes a) a DO degree for an accredited COM and b) AOA board certification in his/her primary specialty. Previous academic experience is required. A connection to Montana or the mountain states is preferred, but, is not a must have requirement

ridiculous...I don't get why they don't make new residency programs and focus on that instead of schools...

Actually, if this pans out (and it may not) this is a great idea as new schools go. Montana doesn't have a medical school, and neither do neighbors Wyoming or Idaho. Definitely better than NY or Florida or something like that.

I think its being driven by Manipal Group. The same people who own AUA in the caribbean.

This is years away, if ever.

I wouldn't mind moving to Montana.

Strangely enough, the rabbit analogy could be used for DO schools (and AACOM)

Maybe because a medical school and residency are entirely different programs financially and legally and as long as still so many Caribbean graduates get to match there is no danger. It's more important to have more schools to drive out the Caribbean element than open now residencies which would go to them and create more problems for domestic medical schools just like when they buy training sites from schools (see NY and CA).

No. We arent "driving out" the caribbean students, we are simply renaming them. The same students who attend touro-buttfucc campus are the same ones who would be attending a carib school if we didn't keep proliferating.

Every time we open up a new awful DO school, we take 200 caribbean-level medical students and allow them to be called DO students.

We are bringing the degree down to the IMG level. Not distancing from it.

    http://www.manipalgroup.com/aua.htm

They fund AUA and Katsurba medical college (in Manipal), plus several medical schools all over Asia.

Something is telling me this school is going to be a route for IMGs in AUA and Katsurba in order to practice here (I understand the whole OMM requirements, but I don't think that would stop them). That is the feeling I am getting from this, which of course is pure speculation.

Yeah... this isn't what I had in mind for Montana.

Edit: truth be told l, I don't really know anything about Manipal Group. For all I know, they could be really good. At least they have experience running medical schools.

Because there's technically no limit to the money you can make from a school, whereas cash from a residency Los limited by Medicare/govt

Federal student loan dollars are easier to obtain apparently

Of course. Schools basically write their own check with federal loans. The school can determine whatever cost of attendance they want, and grad plus loans will cover it.

Which is exactly why we (med students) are getting raped in the wallet.

Med schools will get whatever amount of money they decide, because loans have no cap

Student loans will give out whatever money we need, because they are guaranteed all of it back plus interest.

This will keep happening until 1)applicants stop flowing in, which will never happen
Or 2) someone takes a stand on behalf of medical students and places a cap on tuition, which will also never happen.

Aka, expect to get tag teamed by your bursar and your government until someone cares enough to do something about it.

I hope this isn't a way for Manipal to funnel FMGs from India (or their off-shore school) into osteopathic residencies. Manipal has been criticised for its practices before.

    edit.
I wonder why an off-shore DO school has never been created? OMM training? spotty country by country recognition of DO degree?

There will no longer be any DO-only residency programs by the time this school graduates its first class, if it ever gets that far.

There are DO training programs in other countries but they do not teach osteopathic medicine and their graduates are not licensed physicians.

I could be wrong, but I think he meant ACGME residencies with osteopathic recognition.

Well if that were the case then the graduates would be eligible for any residency, not just those with osteopathic recognition.
