After reading some of the posts on here, I keep wondering if one of my recommenders holds some kind of secret grudge against me and has been chomping at the bit to ruin my chances at medschool by writing a horrible LOR. Does anyone else feel like this?

I have always heard that you should ask your recommender if they can write a positive recommendation letter. Usually, they will honestly tell you whether they can be positive or not.

I know my 2 science LORs are on point, but my non-science LOR I'm a little worried about. It comes from a english teacher I had. I wanted her to write it because it seemed like she really liked me, and I swore that I aced all of her tests, but she ended up giving me an A-. If she thought I was good, but not good enough for an A, then maybe she thinks I'm a good person, but not good enough to be a physician. Lol, the paranoia.

I'm worried about an outside one from my PI. I'm sure he thinks that I work hard...How intelligent he thinks I am...who knows. I just might be getting onto something, that could be published...I've worked there for 10 months so far. Research and instant gratification...synonymous they are not...

Yeah, I worked a year almost full-time to get my first abstract. Two years to the first first-author paper.

i'm worried about the one from my research supervisor...she and i have clashing personalities and she drives me crazy. she's also never there to see me do my work and it wasn't until after she wrote the letter that she actually saw work of mine that she said truly impressed her. but it seems to be ok so far since i've gotten some interviews...

I asked an engineering professor for a letter and he told me that he never written a letter for med school before... not really worried about that. But the fact that he was over a month late on sending the letter out does. And another incident where a co-worker of mine commented on... ah... it doesn't really matter now that the letters are on their way to the schools.

It's always possible that they could have mistaken your gender when writing the letter.

P.S.: I've actually heard of this happening. Girls, wear a tank top, and guys, grow out your facial hair. Let the message be clear.
