I'm starting out my last semester here at college, and one thing that has intimidated me the entire time is simply how many ruthless, foraging, wild, beastial biology and pre-med students exist.
every semester i've had about 2 long biology labs in which we work in small groups (4 or 5 people). and EVERY semester there are 2 or more people in my group that spend EVERY free minute discussing grades, professors, MCATs, medical schools, resumes, scores, who's writing recommendations for them, and what they plan to say at interviews. the topics of conversation aren't what trouble me - it's the harsh, competitive "sizing up" and "beating down" that occurs between them. though they speak pleasantly and politely, they always display a sharp bitterness as they measure themselves up with one another. i find such talk insanely shallow, as i never once heard them discuss "why i love medicine" or "what i plan to study."
is it just me? anybody else find this attitude around? these message boards are swarmed with it, but i suppose that's the very purpose.
i guess i can't blame people for wanting something so badly, but when they kick and scratch their way to the finish i question whether or not they're doing it for the right reasons.
