I was wondering if anyone would like to share why they are pursuing the beautiful and intriguing career of medicine.

Treating diseases. Oncology was my initial thing. Then I got bitch slapped by the powers that be admins of the hospital and realized it's about RVU/Money.
So now I don't know why I left pharmaceuticals.

I would like to share but I think this is more easily discussed over a candle light dinner. Red wine or white wine? Also, I like that you have the jaw structure of Archer. Oh and your eyes.

In all seriousness: being a doctor is a good job with good job security that enjoys a lot of respect socially. As expensive as the education is, you don't really have to worry about the stress of finances as a physician if you don't want to (of course you can overextend yourself like anyone else can, but that's another issue). Medicine is a versatile, scientifically and technolologically rich field with a lot of intellectual rigor.

There's a lot to like about medicine, but ultimately it's not actually all that special. The reasons it was good for me are many of the same reasons other high-powered professional careers are good for other people: income, security, status and intellectual substance.

Of course medicine also helps people but that's such a bull**** answer people give to stroke their own egos. Anything that pays you helps people in some way. That's why you're getting paid. Also, frankly, my preferences come before those of others when it comes to my own life. I care most about what makes me happy and anything else is just a bonus (a great bonus that I love about medicine, but a bonus nonetheless).

I couldn't possibly disagree with this more.

I suggest you speak for your own motivations and not for mine.

What? I wasn't trying to speak for your motivations. I just think it's misguided to go into medicine because it "helps people." Anything that pays you helps people. Again, why are people paying for your goods or services if that's not the case? If someone went into medicine for no other reason than to help people, they literally stumbled into the field by picking a career at random.

"If someone went into medicine for no other reason than to help people, they literally stumbled into the field by picking a career at random."

Sure sounds like you were talking about other people's motivations.

I worked a good job for a decade. It paid well. It didn't really help anyone. It didn't really solve any problems for anyone. It didn't have a direct visceral impact on anyone's life.

I chose medicine specifically in order to help people. To solve dramatic, important problems. To have a direct visceral impact on the lives of my patients.

And you know what? I didn't stumble into the field by picking a career at random, and that's not a bull**** answer I give to stroke my own ego. So keep that to yourself.

    Jobs that help people include:
    Mechanics
    Technicians
    Interior decorators
    Landscapers
    Insurance agents
    Bankers
    Lawyers
    Babysitting
    Dog walkers
    Valets
    Butlers
    McDonald's
    Starbucks
    Petsmart
    Amazon
    Gas stations
    AAA (not the abdominal one)

I can go on. But I think the point is made how vague "I want to help people" really is.

Bro, if you are so secure in your choice to enter medicine solely because medicine "helps people," why are you now irate that I dared to challenge the basis of that decision?

I maintain that if you're getting paid, the person paying is doing so in compensation for your help. I don't understand why that's a difficult concept. Medicine is not special in this regard.
