if youre an out-of-stater why bother applying to UC schools when their in-state acceptance is freakin crazy?

UCLA - 97%
USC - 82%
UCFS - 94%
UCSD - 97%
UCD - 99%
UCI - 100%

(stats from USNews.com)

I'm Sorry, I don't ever remember USC being a UC???????

UC's are state schools. As such they cater to in-state applicants.

USC is a private school. It is not a UC.

that number for ucla is a little high compared to what msar says. UC's are all good schools meant to produce MD's for Californians. Look at state schools in other states and the in-state percentages are usually going to be that high.

my pre-med advisor told me not to apply to any California schools... it would be just like throwing money away.

BUT, I didn't take his advise and I got accepted to USC and interviewed at UCSF (waiting for decision)... so I don't think it was as hopeless as he made it sound.

What are your stats, if you don't mind me asking?

I see you're new, welcome! Those numbers are staggering. I'm not sure if they're completely accurate. Sure seems that way though, doesn't it?

So why bother? I suppose you could ask the same question about bothering to apply anywhere at all. If there's even the slightest chance, I'd take it. You should too.

Meanwhile, you can boost those chances by keeping up the obvious: gpa, ec's, engaging in non-criminal activity only and blowing away mcats... etc. 🙂

Are those your teeth in your avatar? They sure do look perfect.

Someone has to get in from out of state. Why not you? The only way you can be sure that you won't get in is if you don't apply.

UCSD interviews quite a few out of staters and accept quite a few. They just choose not to go there. When I interviewed, out of 8 people, 3 were from the east coast. Give it a shot.

UCD does have a few out of staters here (3 in my class). So it's not impossible either. Can't beat California weather though.

instead of a show on E!, I'm going to have a show on Lifetime called Dr. Fargo where in my ob/gyn practice I give older, midwestern women the liberation of hysterectomies and Pap smears; I will also lament about my not being able to get into UCSF and having to settle on a midwestern med school which ultimately led me to just jack off during med school so I couldn't get into a plastics residency. It should be a hit. :scared:

Most (if not all) the UCs screen the AMCAS, so why not spend the $30 if it's a school you want to go to? If they deem you not competitive at all, it's not even that big of a financial loss.

They have a really high MCAT, if I recall from the earlier days of app cycle. However, don't remember the stats on their GPA.

But the OP was saying that even with high scores, it is hard to get an interview at any of the UC's. So I think that is moot point.
