Hey everyone. I am looking for an answer to this question. I know why I am interested in dentistry, but I am not sure if it is a solid enough answer.

1. I want to help people. (Lame, I know. Everyone says this one at an interview, but it is true. I am a nursing assistant now, and I can truly say that helping people makes me happy.)
2. The lifestyle. (I am not sure if this is an acceptable answer. Dentistry is more appealing to me than medicine because: I will not be in school until I am 30 if I choose anything but OMFS, It allows me to have more time with my family because there is less call and fewer working hours in a week, and it provides a financial situation that allows myself and my family to live comfortably.)
3. I enjoy the artistic side of dentistry. (Dentistry is more artistically based than medicine, other than plastics I suppose. My problem with this answer is that I do not have many artistic hobbies, so I really couldn't back up the point that I like the artistic side.)
4. I want to be my own boss. (This is very appealing to me, but my grades say otherwise. I tried a business class last semester and got a B in it. Haha.)

Are these okay to say? These are the real motivators behind my decision to go into dentistry, and I'm sure they are some of the reasons that you SDNer's decided on dentistry too.

(Before anyone says "check other threads for similar posts", I did. I just wanted a recent and up to date answer on why dentistry.)

Thanks!🙂

You could still say #2, but I would rephrase it a little. But do not ever disparage another profession directly or indirectly to justify your career choice.

Well, it's not like reasons for people going into dentistry have changed that much over... two years.

Your reasons are perfectly fine, since they ARE your reasons. Wanting to help people is a perfectly fine motivation (and in fact, should be everybody's reason). It may sound lame if you just say it outright like that, so maybe you can flesh it out: What kind of people do you want to help? Where did you see dentists helping people, and how did that make you feel?

The lifestyle issue is kind of sensitive, but no less legitimate. Most people wouldn't recommend putting it on the personal statement, but it can be something you mention in an interview.

I think those are reasons that many, if not most, people have for going into dentistry. As long as they're also your own personal reasons I see nothing wrong with them. As others have said, tread lightly with the "lifestyle" route. Perhaps mention it in passing, but it may not work to your advantage to ramble on about how enjoyable your personal life may be later on in your career. 😛

Your reasons for dentistry are fine. What you can do to improve them is to add in the "why".

For instance, and I'll take the more difficult reason, pertaining to "life-style"..

My father passed away when I was 9. I learned from an early age that what I wanted in life, when I had my own family, was to BE around. There are many other professions that require massive amounts of work time (aka, away from family) and those do not appeal to me. Dentistry provides a great profession of being able to give back to the community, advances in technology and for me, ample opportunity to spend time with my family.

Hope this sheds some light..

Allow me to play Admissions Officer with your answers for a second:

1. Actually, no one (competent enough) says it at an interview because it's an awful answer. You want to help people? Then why don't you just stick to being a nurse...

2. You want to live comfortably...how sure are you that your business isn't going to fail? How comfortably are you going to live when you have literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans and even MORE hundreds of thousands from buying into a practice? Good thing you have a wife and kids to help carry your financial burden.

3. ARTISTRY is the most overused answer for 'why dentistry'. You want to stick to medicine and be an artist. Be a plastic surgeon. If you really like the artistic side of dentistry, have fun being pigeon-holed with tough ethical questions about Cosmetic Dentistry.

4. You'd better phrase it a lot better than "I want to be my own boss" - you'll come off as a power tripper.

The question is "why dentistry"....not "why not medicine".

These answers aren't too good.

The best answer is to tie it in with a theme that resonates throughout your application and background. That's what I did and the interviewers seem to love the originality.

I used #1 and like i have said 1 million times on sdn here before the majority of people who give you feedback are ignorant as hell. For me #1 is the TRUTH. this is why i want to become a dentist. So why would i change my reason just so i dont sound cliche. No instead you back up your answer with things you have done to show that you are really are interested in helping people. Every single one of my letters of recommendation say that I go out of my way to help others. Thats all that matters. It doesnt matter what anyone on SDN thinks. All that matters is that YOU are happy and confident with your answer. Be proud of who you are, not what any of these others kids on here want.

Yeah, but when the nth person says the same answer as in #1 it kind of loses its appeal. It's similar to the cliche 'weakness' answer of being a perfectionist. Also, what happens when one of your interviews is closed file, meaning he/she didn't read your LOEs, how will you back it up?

When you are sincere about doing something, then it wont matter whether its opened file or not. You have to be passionate about what you want. And if you trick the interviewer, you cant trick God. So if you are sincere and your intentions are what you claim, then leave it up to God and he will do whats best for you.

Leave it to the SDN adcom members to tell you what a good answer is... It all matters in how you phrase it and be genuine about it.

it doesnt matter what the adcom thinks. if the reason why you want to do it is to help people, then it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks. if you cant even stand up for what you believe and dont even have the mind to think for urself then in my opinion you dont even deserve to be in graduate school. no wonder our country is in such the state it is in today...lol because people only do things so others can accept them. whatever happened to being yourself. im pretty sure every classroom in elementary and middle school had a reminder for that...

right man, but you know how many times they hear the same thing aka "all i ever wanted to do was help people." just like a girl hears all the time "you're so cute lets go out." lol my point is that they are sick of that and they know most of the time, its not a genuine answer. so in the end, you should say what you feel is correct, but most people want to go into dentistry for a variety of reasons, yet very few of them have "help others" as the #1 reason. (A follow up question by an adcom can be "so why not go work at teach for america and help out our youth with their education or volunteer in a 3rd world country, there are plenty of other ways to help people.)

I can never understand why people say "help others".... its not free service ya know.

Helping others is when you do something OUTSIDE of your normal life to REALLY help out (example volunteering, pro-bonos, work at cost, basically not making a profit)

I dunno about you guys, but when I am 400k in debt, the last thing I'll be thinking about is "helping" others.

Your reasons for dentistry are fine (all of them), but ITS ALL ABOUT THE PRESENTATION, and not necessarily what you say but rather, HOW you say it. Your tone, eye contact, pitchy voice, nervous hand holding, rolling eyes up/down at the instant you start speaking are all signs of someone whom either knows how to interview, or doesn't.

the more you give the more you get. so yes if i am in 1 million dollar debt, and someone comes to me who needs dental care that they cannot afford i will give it to them for free.

though I admire your ambitions and motives, when the time comes, that statement can be very difficult to back up, near impossible. facing that amount of debts is frightening to say the least. if you give one person for free, you have to give every needy person for free.

😱 very nice of you bro

but I just think that is kind of unrealistic
or just hard to do really

yeh? today Uncle Jack got a free treatment... next week, his brother hears about it, comes to you and plays the "poor" card.... then 2 weeks later, their 3 cousins stop by with a similar lay'd off story.

And about a month later, half of the patients whom come to your office are asking for probono work cause they can't afford it.

Are you telling me you'll do all those people for free?

There is a fine line between being a good healthcare provider vs free healthcare provider. My goal in this profession is to be the good guy, do excellent work, give healthcare advice to the best of my knowledge, and charge for my services according to how I feel is fit.

👍 most opinionated response ive ever seen from you, but I like it. Its honest, I dont like fairy tale or unreal responses that we often see on here. Idealism is good on paper, but rarely works in real life.

hence why i said be genuine about it.

Dude you don't need to bull**** us, its the interviewer you need to give this bs to. And someone that couldn't afford it wouldnt be in your office the first place because they know that even though they dont have any money to eat and are starving, they need the money for their apartments rent.Ya, sure, you'll find a bum on the street and give him a cleaning.

Your reason should be personal and genuine. From there, you can take it from any angle. Money, career autonomy, and lifestyle are all good reasons but you have to prove you can work hard to earn and deserve it.

You should never mention money on any of your interviews. Dont get me wrong, those can be why you are entering, just not why during any interviews.

I don't think wanting to go into dentistry to help other is a bad answer, I think saying " to help people" is not the best answer. If you could word is so that you are implying this, then I believe it would accomplish your goal without being cliche.

you know i was involved in an accident last year. so bad that i had surgery. anyway point of the story is i met this chiropractor who treats anyone who is needy for free. ANYONE that comes to him and needs his service he is there to offer it. needless to say he is always in the newspaper for that town, is the official chiropractor of the nets, is about to seal the yankee deal. oh and did i mention he just made a mercedes benz superbowl commercial. all that because again when you do good, then good is all you can receive. Regardless of whether you guys belive in the verses of the Quran or not, heres is a small english translation......

Is there any Reward for Good - other than Good? Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny? [Quran 55:60-61] .......

The point is not to preach. But im just stating my point of view. I feel because i like to go out of my way and help others, God is always there when i need Him. Thats just my two cents. Im not arguing with you guys. Each one of us is entitled to his own respective opinion. 👍

Well that's good that there are such generous people like you out there. I'll refer the patients who can't afford my rates to you.

i think thats very noble and very respectable, more of us should be like him.

Doesn't really matter what you say, just be honest and don't say anything too crazy like I want to be a dentist because I hear they make a lot of money. It's more about your GPA/DAT than you may realize.

BTW amalgamgrillz, you are entitled to your opinion but relax with the condescending tone and attitude. I wonder if you have the balls to talk to people like that face to face.

This is a very bad example. C'mon how much time and what are the true costs of a chiropractic adjustment? It takes no more than 2-3 minutes to adjust someone's neck, back and whatever else that needs to be done. And it doesn't cost the chiropractor anything except his time which apparently isn't much. With dentistry, it'll cost the dentist hundreds in materials per patient, let alone the minimum 45 min. needed to complete a procedure. I also wonder if this chiropractor would've been doing this pro bono if not for the services he has with the Nets meaning he's already making loot and can afford to offer a free twist of the neck to a joe schmo off the street. It could be another story if he was struggling in his patient base like a lot of chiropractors out there.

I would love to live in an idealistic utopia but unfortunately, time and time again I am forced to put my foot down.

Can I ask why you're not pursuing medicine?

You'd undoubtedly make a more significant impact on your patients life as a physician than as a dentist, so if you're basing your career on truly altruistic reasons...why not go to medical school?

Or rather why he is not pursuing a career in a truly nonprofit organization, helping people world wide with a focal point on third world countries.

In my humble opinion, that is much more than what one mere dentist can accomplish even when given multiple life times.

thats probably the best response you've ever had. and yes i do mean that seriously. (so its a semi-compliment) 👍

Because these nonprofit types are broke, drive a POS, can't afford a nice dinner and have nothing for retirement and are stuck watching soap operas all day instead of traveling around the world during their golden years.

Nothing wrong with implying that you want to get into dentistry to help people, but try to tie it in with some specific aspect of dentistry. It shows that A) you know both the benefits and limitations of the profession and B) you've still got a good conscience about it.

ie., instead of just blatantly saying "I want to go into dentistry to help people," say something like "I want to go into dentistry because I realize dentistry is a field that..." and fill in the blank with something positive, which implies that you want to help patients as much as possible, but also keeps you in moderation since you're simply stating a concrete fact. It shows you don't have unrealistic expectations about your future profession.

How can I paraphrase "I go to dentistry to pick up girls"? 😀

lol that was a funny thing bout MWU-IL, only 37% of the class were females and majority of them were married 😱

So you would rather me not tell them about the dentist who will do their needed work for free? You're heartless..

If you're going to say that you want to help people, then at least use a better word such as "aid" people or "take care" of people.

Well, if you comprehended my previous post, I did not tell you not to state your opinions/ideas/facts/whatever. I simply told you to relax with the condescending tone.

Condescension is subjective. I just stated facts: if my patients can't afford my rates, then I'll send them to him, where they can receive their veneers, implants, whitening, dentures, and all the other expensive procedures for absolutely no cost. But here you go, Mother Teresa, here's a warmer and fuzzier edit:

**😍:luck:😍Well that's good that there are such generous people like you out there. I'll refer the patients who can't afford my rates to you. 😍:luck:😍 .**

Better?

There's a difference between a neutral tone and a negative tone. You have a condescending and all knowing tone almost every time you post on SDN. I know you won't talk in such a tone to strangers face to face. So why do it on here?

Yes, that is much better. Now apply it to all your responses. I know you can do it! One baby step at a time. I'm glad I'm such a positive influence on you .
