Hi All,

This is not a question I ask to prepare for the interview or anything like that, but it is more like coming out of my curiosity. To whose who got accepted to several dental schools, why have you chosen to attend NYU?

As what I know, the DDS program at NYU is not as outstanding/competitive compared to other dental schools. The incoming class is huge (~240 students) and sometimes students have to look for their own patients in their junior/senior years due to a lack of patients.

Out of all other good dental schools, why did you choose NYU? I am very curious.

someone got an e-mail 🙂

I think you should do your own research instead of having someone answer your application update status. Nice try

Reasons to choose NYU:

1. You did not get accepted anywhere else.

2. You have family ties in New York or just love the city and would like to practice there.

3. You have too much money.

what email are you guys speaking of? is it for those who have been accepted?

I got an email this afternoon stating that my application is "strong" but due to blah blah they haven't made a final decision, so please fax in any updated grades and a statement describing why you want to go to NYU.

Ranelar, have you already interviewed at NYU? Do you know if this e-mail was sent to applicants on the waitlist or just applicants that they are interested in interviewing?

Thanks!

I have not interviewed, so it's probably only for that.

4. Your state school sucks balls, or you don't have a state school.

5. You only got into NYU and USC, and NYU is cheaper (and better in general).

6. You have a Military HPSP scholarship and the government is footing the bill, thus there are few reasons NOT to go to NYU.

I chose NYU over Penn, cause I was put off by their creepy lecture halls. Also, NYU's building is really nice. and I got rejected by everyone else including my state school.

Hahaha, I'm glad you picked up on my tone and finished the list appropriately.

Even with the stipend, one would, most likely have to take out additional loans. After Uncle Sam dips into the $1907/month, you will have enough for that 1200 dollar 2 bedroom slit between three roomates along with the high cost of food. Even with the military, it'd be really tight on your wallet. Okay, another reason!

Well, you get a $20,000 signing bonus, and you can take out a few thousand in subsidized stafford loans if you really need to, so unless you spend like a baboon, you should live comfortably.

I heard in one of my many Financial presentations that taking the 20k signing bonus adds an additional year. So 5 years if you go all 4 years and take the signing bonus. Not something they advertise very much...

Taking the 20k adds an additional year if you only need it for three years. So the options are 1) 4 year scholarship and 20k bonus with 4 years active duty in payback or 2) 3 year scholarship no bonus and 3 years active duty payback also there is 3) 3 year scholarship +20k bonus and 4 years active duty payback.

Side note: Your total commitment is for 8 years. Subtract your active years from the 8 total and that is how many years you are in Inactive ready reserves. However that is kind of irrelevant as no dentist has been called up from IRR in the last 50 years at least.
