A lot of my classmates have done research during summer while I spent my vacation just for fun. I am thinking about doing it this summer. However, I am wondering if there is any advantage when you do research in addition to boosting your resume to apply for PG program?

Great question.!!!!
..I would also like to know about the merits of doing summer research besides updating your resume and also getting a recommendationn from a faculty member for future program application!!! 😀
Hope we get some helpful replies!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bone biology, development and diseases...biomedicine and biotecnology, such as developing biomaterials for improved implant... diagnosis and treatment of Head and Neck Cancer...dental diseases as infectious diseases..etc.
For specific research being done by ucla faculty go to http://uclasod.dent.ucla.edu/research/

Advantages:
1) Make some $$$
2) Publish an abstract, maybe even a paper
3) Present your research at a national meeting (your school may even fund your entire trip)
4) Add variety on your resume (research experience, publications, presentations)
5) Get to know the faculty better in a non-lecture hall setting
6) Learn something
7) Get involved with the student research group
8) Do something different that distinguishes you from the rest of your classmates

It's a personal choice. Since my dental school was also in my hometown, I had nowhere to go so doing some summer research seemed like a good plan. We also had a good amount of time each year during the summer so it was possible to do multiple projects or concentrate on one project over consecutive years. It was a great experience and some of my best memories & experiences of dental school are from my research involvement.

It was a great choice for me. Some of my closest friends were my research classmates; my other good friends were at the opposite end with the "research sucks" belief.

here is my personal opinion, no offense to those doing research while in dental school.

For me, personally, research requires alot of time and dedication, which I dont think is possible to do while being in dental school. Summer programs are way too short to really get into a decent project.

Undergrad research is better because there is more time but the draw back is the lack of basic science as the college career goes along compared to post Bachelor research.

anyhow, I just think that it is silly that dental students do research because it will boost their resume for post doc programs. I mean, if I were on an admission committee for post - doc programs, I would not value this so much, since I think that great research and dedication is usually for those in the PhD track, and I prefer a student who is willing to do research post-doc for a year before starting their specialty residency if they really do love research.

I just dont like the BS of pretending to do research just to boost one's resume when there is really no passion in it, compared to the PhD students.

Just my two cents.
