Why do you want to be a Doctor?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
are you fishing for answers to a possible essay question or inteview question? 🙄

do a search.

To help those less fortunate than we are. I am cynical about much of the world. But I really think people should provide comfort for a fellow man. Even if we are all going to die anyways. That is just my two lincoln's worth.

LOL! It seems as if every newbie on this forum asks that SAME question. There should be an intro page that says:

BEFORE POSTING HERE ARE SOME COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN ANSWERED BEFORE AND YOU SHOULD RUN A SEARCH:

1) Why do you want to become a doctor?
2) Will X GPA and Y MCAT score get me in?
3) What are your extracurriculars?
4) How many extracurriculars do I need?
5) What's the difference between DO and MD?
6) Is research important?
7) How many schools is too many?
8) Why does TTSD have sand up his vagina today?

TTSD. Lay off. I don't think it is cool to brag about how long you have been on this website. The longer you are on here = the less qualified of a candidate you are.

The question is, "Why do I want to be a doctor?" Which makes me wonder if this...Interviewer, has any idea as to the kind of grades one must receive in college, to get on the dean's list at my university? Or if you have the vaguest clue about how talented someone must be to get a 32 on the MCATS? I have an Bachelor's Degree in Biology. I have volunteered hundreds of hours in the local emergency room. I have been awarded citations from seven different comunity service organizations at my highschool and I am never, ever sick at sea. So I ask you; when someone goes into that chapel and they fall on their knees and they pray to God that their bedpans are clean or that their lab results are transported quickly or that their mother has breakfast brought to her hospital room right on time every morning, who do you think they're praying to? Now you go ahead and read your bible--and you go to your church and with any luck you might even win the annual raffle. But if you're looking for God, he was in the library, studying O-Chem on November 17th, and he doesn't like being second guessed. You want to know if I have a God complex? Let me tell you something--I AM GOD.

amen grouptheory.

I for one am still in the stone-age trying to get past string theory. A touch of physics humor to lighten the soul (or as some think to lighten the strings). 😛

I am not looking for interview question answers, I just want people to really evaluate why they want to be a doctor.......as far as being a newbie I'm not confined to the internet partna. I do have friends that don't end with .com or .net so just answer the question and stop trying to clown, cuz I can clown with the best of them.

For me, it's a lot of things. I was diagnosed with cancer a year and a half ago. I ahd two surgeries and started radiation. My oncologist calls me one day and says, "Michael, I have great news for you."

I said, "The cancer is gone?"
She replied, "Not exactly. You don't have cancer, you never did."

So two surgeries and hours of therapy later, I know I want to do all that I can to prevent someone from having to hear those words, "You have cancer."

My oncologist and my therapist were two of the MOST caring people I have ever come across in medicine. I was amazed at how much emotion they laid out and how much they were genuinely interested in my progress. Too many times I have gone to a doctor and all I get is a cold stare and no social skills. I want to put a caring touch into medicine. I want every one of my patients to know that I care about them. That I'll get those lab reports to them asap, that I'll schedule that out-patient procedure around your schedule, not mine.

I want to be a doctor because I want to help someone. I want to be a doctor because sometimes, patients need a shoulder to cry on and yours is the only one available.

Medicine needs to move away from being such a cold, sterile entity. I want to help it get there.

Thank you for contributing your reason to the SDN community. Your answer is very inspirational 🙂

I want to be a doctor because it is a challenge, interesting, one of the highest education levels, job security and it pays really well.

Wow, what a story! I read something a few years ago in a womans magazine about a girl who was diagnosed with cancer, she went through a year of chemo (and whatnot) that made her *very* sick, she was very young and spent all that time sick and guess what? In the end it was a misdiagnosis and she never had any cancer to begin with! In-freakin-credible! So it certainly does happen....

I want to be a doctor for a few reason. I really love people and would like to make a positive difference in their lives ( poor people, rich people, people who smell bad, I think everyone has a purpose in life and I don't care how cliche that sounds to anyone).

My parents both have diabetes, my mom has had cancer, my MIL died 2 years ago of lung cancer, my best friend has just been diagnosed (at the age of 23) with cervical cancer, another friend of mine just found out her 6 year old daughter has a brain tumor, etc etc I want to be part of the team that helps people. I really feel doctors anymore do not take the time with their patients (of some do and they are so inspiring!). I realize some of that has to do with insurance, but nothing stops doctors from actually caring about their patients....

Half the time they don't seem to even care- you are just a disease. I will never forget when I went in to have my youngest daughter and when I was pushing her out (this is no easy feat...lol) the doctor was literally just staring at the ceiling and I will never forget that feeling I had when I realized she didn't care one bit about me.....

I guess I want to be a doctor because I love medicine, and I know I can be a better doctor than so many of them out there, I really care about people, and I understand what it is like to be diagnosed with a disease and how that affects *everything* in your life.

No touching family story here. No personal health triumph completed.

I want to be a doctor largely because I think that medicine is incredibly fascinating and I love interacting with people!
I presently am, and have been for several years, a self employed computer consultant.
I love people, I love helping, I love being challenged, and I work hard. At one point, being self employed offered all of this, but I can't see myself doing it in 10-15 years. My only option is to branch into areas of computers that I find to be unsatisfying (programming mainly), or go for what I really always wanted to do - be a doc.

There you go. No mushy stuff, just simply a life goal for self happiness 🙂
