Why do you want to be a Doctor?
I know everyone has been asked this question alot. But, i am interested in knowing everyone's responses.

Research opportunities that just aren't there for straight PhDs.

More cognitively oriented work. Patients rather than customers. More variety in the day. Less wheel-spinning, more effective role in patient care. That pretty much sums it up.

patients are customers...billing is everything.

you see lots of repeat chronic problems. even as an ER doc: sore throat, ear ache, unexplainable stomach pain for many weeks, chest pains.

as far as wheel spinning, i'd call that paperwork. as a care provider you'll spend half your day doing paperwork.

...so why the heck do i wanna get in this business? for that one time when the crap hits the fan. i want to be there to use my training and switch into autopilot. i don't want to freeze up and scream like a maniac. i want to be actively charging to the front of the disaster.

and yes i am crazy.

Becoming a doctor is being given the chance to be in a dynamic field in which the learning never stops. It is also an opportunity to do something that is intellectually stimulating on a daily basis, with no patient being similar to another. It is also known to be a noble field that is highly respected and rewarded. But..........if I really had my wish, I'd play football for the Pittsburgh Steelers (Go Steelers) :D

To Help people! hehehehehehe I just had to say that. I want to become a doctor in part becasue I love the interaction of the patient care taker relationship and being an EMT wasn't enough and also because this is one of the few professions were absolutely no one is a know it all. I love continuing education and medicine is the ultimate in both of those reasons.

I just like being around people. I also love solving problems and puzzles so I look forward to the challenge of being a doctor.

This is not a good question (although something everyone asks you if you're a premed).

What matters is that I (and all of you) want to be a doctor(s), aware of all the hardships and hopefully, ready to face them.

You can't extract the true reason unless you hypnotize them and have a Psychiatrist do an analysis of the person.

My opinion--this is a bad question (no offense to anyone). :)

What I like about the medical profession: patient-interaction (I love diversity), challenging environment, problem-solving, intellectually stimulating work.

I want to be able to feel like I did something meaningful when I get home from work!

Of course you are respected and you get enough money to live a comfortable lifestyle...I would like to own an nice hjome and be able travel extensively

If you're smart enough to get into and out of medical school, you could make MUCH more money in business. Seriously, doctors don't get paid that much for how smart/hardworking they have to be. It's not the money job that it was 25 years ago.

That being said, BMW M5 all the way. :)

But seriously, I really do want to help people and do good. I know it's trite, but that truly is at the base of my desire. Being a lifelong student is also very appealing, but I can't imagine anything better than using my skills to give/save life. I had the chance to die when I was about 16, but my doc's prevented it. They gave me everything I have, really. Its sappy and romantic, and I understand that much of a doctor's life is the everyday grind, but MAN those highs must be high.

I retorted "yeah but not everyone has a community service record as strong as mine!"

I got put on the waitlist.

By the way, I am not a dude and I didn't ask this question for an interview, essay, or paper. I am pre-med soon to be start college and I was just interested in knowing everyone's answers. I was asked that question and wanted to see some other peoples responses.

He? I am a she. By the way , As I said before I do not need it for an essay, interview, or whatever. I am a soon to be freshman in college, and was just interested in knowing everyone's reply or reason.
Do people always ask this question to use it for an essay or something???
I am not using it for that. I can think of my own essay and my own answer to an interview question when I get there. But, I won't be taking the MCAT or interviewing for another 3 or 4 years. Can't anyone just ask a question anymore?

Hey there Insy,

Sorry if it seemed like I was picking on you--most people here aren't out here to pick on anyone.

It's just that the "why" question is so hard to answer truthfully without sounding insensitive/malevolent. Plus, it is so hard to answer accurately. Why does an Engineer want to be an Engineer? A Lawyer a Lawyer? An Accountant an Accountant? Just because... a bunch of things combined.

No one bothers asking these people why--its assumed one knows what he's getting himself into if they endure the trouble of taking the courses, volunteering and writing the application. Likewise, it should be here.

Like Assassin said, if interviewers keep asking "why" they're going to keep getting bottled answers. Most of us will make good physicians, maybe not the best.

That's ok. I can understand that point of view. I am sure I and many other people will make great doctors. I am learning alot from this site. I will be ready for med school in no time. I know the road will be hard but I will stick with it. Good Luck to you all!

I want to help people and make lots of money. And people think doctors are sexy.

Philanthropy, money, and sex. What more do you need. Am I in yet?

Well, I just love people and I want to help them so much and this and that and blah blah blah...oh, I forgot this is anonymous (more or less), so I can be honest (more or less).

For me, it was basically a process of elimination. I'm too dumb and greedy to be a real doctor (PhD). :( I lack the basic moral rectitude necessary for business, and I lie so much that I couldn't even be a lawyer or politician. Furthermore, my self-esteem is too fragile to let me do something productive like cleaning toilets.

But most of all, I'm an @$$hole, and so medicine is where I'll fit in best. :p In fact, you virtuous SDNers may find yourselves sticking out rather strikingly...but we'll all be rich, so who gives a f*ck? See you on the greens!

I almost hate that question as much as , "So what other schools have you applied to?"

My response to your question will not add to this thread.

Find out what is a doctor, and ask yourself if that is what you want to be. How badly do you want it? Are you willing to almost kill yourself to get there? Is it worth it?

I was just teasing, sorry if I made you feel bad. Anywho, like it was said before it is a hard question. Sorry about the "he" thing too. :D

That's ok. I have thought about this for years. When I 16, I told someone I wanted to be a Doc, they told me I should be a nurse and told me the reasons why. Anyway, I thought Ok, sure. That was before I really knew what a Doctor did and how I had to go to med school etc.
So for a about 9 months I wanted to be a nurse then i started reading tons of books about the medical field and the passion lit up again. I want to be a Doctor! I read a lot of those books, like Arrowsmith, A not entirely benign precedure, and many, many others. I've read plenty of articles, talked to people.
One thing that is weird is , that when ever I tells some one I want to be a doctor, they say , Why, Be a nurse. You should be a nurse. We need more nurses. or My wife is a nurse, you should be one? They try to discourage me from being a Doc. That worked the first time. But now I know some of what it is about.
It is amazing what Doc's do. In my opinion. i understand all the hard work and schooling that will go into it and I am prepared.
I enjoy watching ER, but some good shows are on TLC, Like: Code Blue, Maternity Ward, and some good medical shows that come on , on other channels. The weirdest thing that you may think it is strange, is that on this one channel, they were having an Eye surgery, and I had to stop and watch it, it was fascinating. I had to see how the doctors operated and worked.
I personally think I might be a Emergency Med doc or a General Practitioner. I took one of those tests that tell me what specialty that would be good for me, and these two were in the top ten. I plan to work in places where they need doctors. My top place is on an Indian Reservation where they need doc's. :)
I am not in it for money, social standings, or just whatever, I just want to be a Doctor to be able to heal people, help them, to learn.. I know when you are a doc you will constantly learn and that is one thing I would love about it. After constantly reading, researching, talking people, for the past 3 years that is what I want to do. Plus having clinical experiance has helped my decision. I have taken care of my grandmother for the past since I was 13, for the past 7 years. It has helped my decision. I have learned alot about many different things. She has Lung cancer, diabetes, and many things. It has almost been like a 24 hr job so I wouldn't mind the late nights.
Sorry. It almost sounds like I am writing my medical acceptance essay. Didn't mean to. Just felt comfortable and started writing. I hope many of you make it and keep your dream. Many of you will be great doctors. . Didn't mean to turn this in to a long chatting session.
I hope you all have a great weekend! and life!

You want the real reason? You should check out my website.

www.geocities.com/scrupulouspersonalstatement/

What you'll read in my personal statements is only part of the reason why.

Nanon

TY. I will have to spend some time and write my personal statement up and post it to you sometime. I have to get started.... What is the sentence that is good to start with?..... Because I want to help people?... it seems everyone loves that sentence everywhere.

Maybe because I have this weird dream to go and discover life forms on other planets and bring them back to earth to meet us? and I may need to be a doctor so if one of them needs to be Resuscitated because they choke on something on the way here or something?? just kidding..
But I will write up my personal statement and have it posted on your site sometime. With me it would probably be a new one every year. lol As I change and I will have more reasons that strengthen the reason why I want to be a Doctor.

 Wow, remember those days of being an unjaded premed with hope and inspiration, and every idea was so pretty, there is so much beauty in the...Then you take the MCAT and, bam! it's like...yeah, if I survive I'll take the silver beamer.

Best of luck kid, just remember why when you are figuring out how.

I take it that you have been out on the frontline of medicine in some form already. It's good that you find it a positive route to commit your life to. It's a tough life and not everyone can cut it.

I'd have to agree with TwoSteve... This year, with MCATs and GPA worries and ECs coming out of my butt and premed committee interviews and boring research projects and personal statements and AMCAS, nearly sucked the life out of me. I used to sit in my room at school staring at my Kaplan books wondering why I had to choose such a hard profession to get into... Why couldn't I just like something easier??? But after dragging my feet for a really long time I realized that "something easier" just wouldn't make me happy. I couldn't be satisfied with anything else besides medicine, even despite the fact that getting there is a hard process, and that making it through is probably even harder... So yeah, it's easy to get discouraged and to forget why you're putting yourself through all the work. But in the end I hope it will be worth it. :)

Because I'd rather not have to write 200-page grants every other year just to support my family.

b/c I'll be good at it,
b/c it is challenging,
b/c I like the idea of life long learning,
b/c the pay is pretty good,
b/c I can work on my altruistic capabilities,
b/c I am fascinated by life
b/c I can then be on an admissions committee and determine whether or not the interviewee has come up with the answers on her own
b/c I work best under pressure,
b/c people will always need a physician,
b/c I know that I will meet people who will tremendously impact my life positively
b/c (speaking of impact) physicians get to clean out impacted colons (well, atleast residents)
