I am coming across a lot of secondaries with this question, or one similar. What is the best way to respond? Any strategies (especially for schools that may not necessarily be at the top of your list)?

Assuming you meant "XXX" as "XYZ" and not an abbreviation for porn: This isn't a trick question, and they are not seeking some canned overplayed safe answer. Why did you apply? Do some research on the school, if you haven't already, and harp on whatever they offer that is something you are into.

Most importantly, just don't say you like something. It is bad to only say, "I really dig thing X from your curriculum." Whatever you say must be related back to one of your activities. Make it personal. An example would be, "Your school specializes in X type of research. I have also done research in X field and would look forward to the opportunity of continuing this research."
